Patti,
Oh, no, my "doom and gloom" comment was aimed at the daily barrage from the media, and not aimed at you! You and Paul are going through such a rough time right now; I really sympathize!
Marshamouse,
I definitely emphathize with your situation with your mom! I am hoping, for your sake, that she is adjusting to assisted living, and things will stabilize before your anniversary trip to FP this summer. I will email you about loaning you a Tahitian cell phone with a local number that you can use while there; it will help if there is a number for your family to reach you while you are away, and incoming calls from the USA are free. (It's cheaper to use a phone card if you are calling home from FP.) Right now it's out on loan -- I'll email you when I get it back!

Oh no Barbi, I know it wasn't aimed at me. But I am still guilty. I will readily admit I am looking at things from a worse case angle...primarily because we have personally been smacked down by this economy....and we know many others who have recently suffered the same fate as Paul. It's hard not to look at things in a negative light when you're in our shoes. But you guys are correct. People who have not been dramatically affected need to start moving forward with their plans instead of hunkering down fearing the worse. It's crucial to get things moving in the right direction and to prevent things from getting worse.

It's tough to be positive out there because there are tons of people around you that aren't OK- hard working people. It is downright scary as I wonder if there is anyone who doesn't have someone close to them that isn't affected. I think that you have to look at all of those sayings such as a door closing and a new one opening, etc. It all sounds good on paper, I know, but I really believe that positive thinking works because you get into the positive flow of energy instead of the negative. All that philosophical stuff and quantum physics and mechanics, too. I think about you all the time Patti and wish you the best.

Greetings one and all, this is my first post on this site's forum. From everything I've heard and read, I understand travel is down across the board, including FP. I'm leaving for my honeymoon to Moorea in a couple days (staying at the Pearl) and was wondering if the resorts' capacities will be as low as they have been in the past couple months considering August is typically the French holiday month?

I just booked my vacation to the Cook Islands (with a bonus week in New Zealand).
I wanted to go to French Polynesia. But I don't want to be insulted.
The fare I'm paying is far less than what I'd pay to go to Tahiti. Plus they are not limiting my vacation. I would have jumped on that $800ish fare back in the spring but it was for 10 days only. That is crazy, my boss limits my vacation days not Air Tahiti Nui.
I took a substantial salary cut in order to get a new job after I was laid off. Air Tahiti Nui and French Polynesia need to do some belt tightening too.
Tahiti Tourisme send me these crazy emails about people winning free trips there for making videos. They should instead have been sending me emails about specials.

True words my friend. The folks who run Tahiti Tourism have their heads in about 12inches in the Black Sand. They don't know how an American tourist thinks and sadly to say they never will.

Hey Bob...any word at all as to how our letters were received? I'm sure they aren't going to have an impact on them....but just curious if you have heard of any reaction.

Silvanocat, we are in the same situation. The air fares are ridiculous!!! Why have time-limited lengths of stay? Doesn't make sense. The longer you stay the more $$ (rather XPF) you will spend........Big DUH!!!!!
Who are the Einsteins running the Department of Tourism and the other FP agencies that make policy and set air fares anyway? They need a BIG HUGE wake-up call or something even more attention grabbing, IMHO. Offer reduced airfares for longer lengths of stay....but limit arrival and departure days for the ones that historically show low flight loads....wouldn't both tourist, airlines, and the tourism industry (or lack thereof) all benefit?
I don't care WHAT day I fly....I just don't want to go for 5-10 days....nor do I want to pay more than I pay to fly most anywhere else in the world within a 12-15 hour flight range.
Sorry for the rant.....just really frustrated.... guess I have no understanding of economics and am very simple minded.
