Morning from Mexico again,

The archipelago is kind of isolated from the rest of the world, but I am interested in knowing how much Bora Bora, Raiatea and Moorea are affected by the global crisis ? Do you guys feel it there ? Are businesses down ? I am hearing about potential bankruptcies on some airlines going to Tahiti. How much of that is true ?

I don't see airlines higher prices affecting the high-class tourism, but what about medium class and residents ?

Thank you

Phil

The French Polynesian islands are affected. I'm in contact with our caretaker every week and they feel the worldwide crisis
as the rest of the world does.

Thank you. Would you have more details ? How does the crisis affects the islands ? Loss of job, less tourists, higher prices, a bit of everything ?

Many of the hotels have less than 25% occupancy rates.

Some hotels, restaurants, tour services are closing because of lack of business. Airlines are combining and cancelling flights due to lack of customers.

HUGE loss of jobs, way less tourists, small local places closing all over the place in FP. I think they are actually more affected than we are in the USA, because their economy is so tourism-based, and tourism is so down worldwide. Also, they have had an unstable government over the past few months, but things seem to be better now; at least, government funding is going again.

Hopefully, things will improve...

Job loss prediction for BB at 1000 was announced by the unions after a visit last week wit resorts managements , hotels are contemplating on closing, (hotels need 60% occup just to break even on wages some resorts are between 0 and 12% and not many resa for the near futur) some resto's closed as well, people go to Tahiti but no jobs in Tahiti either, Raiatea, business' up for sale and same situation, Air Tahiti has cancelled a lot of inter island flights. Pretty bad and sad situation, unions said they have never seen this before. Unfortunately new government showing "cracks" already with disagreements... foreign and local investments are at zero. It is impressive to have a drink in a resort and seeing 4 tourists in the pool or on the beach or to take an Air Tahiti flight with just locals on board

Maybe I am way off base here, but I think if the flights to FP were cheaper, more people would come. I know I would take another trip to FP instead of my once a year, but the flights add up because I have to go from Minnesota to LA in addition to the FP flight. We went to Puerto Rico in the middle of Feb and the flight was packed both ways with vacationers. Our flight was $409 from Minneapolis and my daughter got a flight for $329. Although we rented a house, I saw that the resort prices were not cheap by any means and the food was not cheap in restaurants either. There was a resort by where we stayed and the highest priced rooms were almost $900. I am not dissing Puerto Rico, but believe me, it does not compare to FP. (although we really enjoyed it) So except for the flight cost, the cost of everything else is up there. I don't think people realize how incredibly safe FP is and how easy it is to get around, aside from the incredible beauty and fish. It pains me to hear about all of these troubles there!

Yes, but I'm not sure enough would come to save the indusrty there. A great many people are simply not traveling right now. No one knows if their jobs are secure. No one knows what the future holds right now. I think the vaste majority of people are just sitting tight to wait until this economic meltdown is over beofre they start making expensive vacation plans.

There are some promotions being offered by some hotels so it is possible to still get a FP vacation IF you are able to factor a vacation in at this time.

We'll go if the flights come down ...They are ridiculous at almost 1500 for July/August...how crazy is that! AND once we get there, we will be on a very tight budget that's for sure....
