Hi All,

We are spending a week in Moorea in early May, as is common in Japan, we have full gear and are used to renting tanks and diving from the shore ourselves without a DM. Do any of the dive shops in Moorea cater to this ?
We would also book a 10 dive package with the same centre, so this would be to suppliment the guided dives with some mornign or evening dives at our resort.

Greatly appreciate any sucggestions.

Firstly, welcome to the forum. Where are you staying at? Steel tanks (reduce your weight belt weights) are the common tanks these days. I dived with Bathy's Dive and they were excellent. Very professional. As far as shore dives (on your own without a boat), as far as I saw, were non-existent. If you want to dive in Moorea, then it is from a boat with a DM. Their video footage from your boat dive is excellent, so stick with a boat. Most of the dives are on the barrier reef, which is too far to swim offshore. shore diving is usually better snorkelling.

Nothing to see from shore. You need a boat to take you to the reef. All dive shops operate that way and all gear is included in the price of the dive. Save the weight, bring your mask fins and snorkle, let them privide the rest . . . or add your own regulator if you get queasy about using somebody elses.

Hi, Thank you both for the replies.

We are staying at Moorea Pearl Resort in the OW bungalows, the Hilton was available at the same rate and Inter Contanental only fractionally more. Perhaps we could still switch if it there was any big difference so appreciate any suggestions.

We would normally stuggle to afford a package to Tahiti from Japan (prices here are normally seriously/unbelievably inlflated) but we got a great offer which combined with the Yen rate at the moment makes it a rare opportunity.
That said, we are used to diving resorts or boats in asia where we do at least 3-4 dives a day, so were hoping to get in some extra dives at a bit lower cost in addition to 2 or so a day with the dive centre.

From what we can see from Google sat maps there seems to be a drop off immediate in front of the Pearl resort, I am surprised that it would not be worth diving. Maybe not great compared to the outer reef, but might still be more interesting than many other locations, and it would be seriously cool to literally roll out of bed into the water in the morning, or very convienient for night dives.

It also seems only 100m or so of enclosed water across the channel to the inside of the reef.

Please excuse the pesky questions ;-)

In a few hundred dives I've never encountered a place before where all dive gear rental is built into the price of the dive by default, I am politely curious as to why that is the normal deal in Tahiti. A lot of divers I know, including myself, would never consider to use rented gear, but I hear it is very high standard ?

When you say video footage from the boat, do they routinely film each dive ?

Many thanks again.

I think oit is because FP is such a new-experience travel destination, and the cost of flying a lot of gear with you is expensive.

They must provide a boat
They must provide air and tanks
A BC would take up your whole luggage space, so that makes sense to provide
Not too many people would think of brings a wetsuit to FP, and you need them maybe 6 months out of the year - so better stock those in the shop too.
That leaves regulators, masks and fins on the optional list. But one can't dive without those, so better stock them too.

So, then, the price structure just includes everything, since it costs the shop about the same to have it on a paying diver, or have it hanging in the shop.

Whole different deal from a dive destination, where MOST folks WILL bring their own equipment

Oh, the distance from hotel to wall is much farther than 100 meters - you need to get to the open ocean side of the lagoon. And, if you get there, how are you going to get across the top of the coral (it comes all the way to the surface of the water)
