We stayed at the Relais Mahana on Huahine for a week after sailing for 11 days on the Star Flyer. Beautiful island, beautiful resort, and wonderful people. I'll try to get together a trip report soon but it was great digging our toes in the sand in front of our beach front bungalow. Very hard to leave the island. We got adopted by the dogs (3) and cats (5)living at the resort and surrounding area. Guess they figured out that we were American suckers and would happily feed them and scatch their ears all day long. Very friendly (if demanding) animals. This one gray striper insisted on moving in with us and we spent most of one night getting up and setting him back outside! All windows looked like doors to him.
The drop in tourism was very apparent. There was only one other couple (French) who got off the plane when we landed on Huahine on Thurs 2/26. Evidently, there were very few Americans on the island. We are pretty gregarious and we only met one other American accompanied by here grandaughter. There were a few Canadians and some French but we met no other nationalities anywhere on Huahine. The Relais Mahana was only about 20% full at its fullest. They were trying as hard as they could but there just were'nt any tourists. Needless to say, we had a very quiet stay. At dinner time, there were only a maximum of three couples. At the restaurant next door, the waitress practically begged us to come back (we were the only people there). Frankly this was very disturbing and we worry how tourist dependent businesses and people are going to get along. Even Fare had few tourists and we heard no English being spoken during our several visits to town.
The Star Flyer was nearly full and the captain loved to sail. The food was great and there were great people on board (Americans, Brits, Germans, and French). This is the kind of trip where you make real friends. Too bad the Star Flyer is leaving FP early next year. Maybe they need to leave so the ship can be refurbished a bit. Too much broken and warn equipment (the worst was no AC -- our cabin was in the 90s) and services like laundry, spa, etc. were not available. There was something wrong with the net by the bowsprit so passengers were forbidden from the foredeck. Even so, we had considerable fun aboard at the Tropical Bar and on various islands.

Yes, isn't Huahine beautiful (and natural)? I miss it so much and I do worry about the tourism business suffering there. I mean, who (apart from FP-philes) has even heard of it.
If getting there from Toronto were only cheaper, we'd go for a month!

Glad you had a great trip. Huahine is our favorite place in all of FP. Unfortunately with our IRAs looking more like IOUs every day it is doubtful we'll be able to get back there this year.

the difference in price between scooters and a car is so negligible that I would go with a car. It may rain off and on, although it is hot. The rain usually is pretty warm, but when I am in an open boat on the water, and I have been rained on there, I do get a little chilly. However, my hubby on the other hand, would be perfectly happy with a scooter, rain or not. Huahine is our favorite place. If you have any other questions, ask away. Be sure that you take car or scooter insurance. A couple of years ago when we were there, a woman backed into us and damaged the car. We were there for almost three weeks, and it was literally the last second that we were there that we found out that we were in no way at fault. We didn't know what to expect being in a foreign country. Have fun! The best place ever. Watch out for kids and dogs that run into the road.
