Last time we were there RM still had a car rental desk and I think they might have scooters too. Pension Mauarii also has car rental.

holte, thank you for the reply and advice, very much appreciated, I guess I do have one question in general,I saw the travel Info area of this site talking about renting a cell phone, is it not possible to call from our resort 2-3 times( to check on family, etc) in the 10 days we are there, back to the US and charge to the room? thanks, Scotty

scotty, yes you can....but you will NOT like the bill you will have at the end of your stay! :-(
Cheaper alternative is probably to send email if your hotel has computers (or from a cyber cafe)to see how everyone is. :-)

yeah DOH ! I guess smoke signals wouldn't work so good !!:O) of course, very easy, I saw where a minute could be 10.00 US, uggg, we're leaving the 'puters home, but a nice cup of java and a couple of emails home would be the ticket. I am looking forward to the "real" reality of life soon..:O) thank you, scotty

I never make any attempt to stay in contact with home when I'm away. I do give a few people at home an exact copy of my itinerary...including addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of where I am staying. I figure if something happens and they need to get in touch with me, they have all the info they need to contact me. :-)

I agree with Patty about having your people email or call you, if need be. There is a cyber cafe in "downtown" Fare, and I did have to email home when my mother-in-law became ill, when my children emailed us at the pension where we were staying. I had to pay the man at the cafe to email as it's a French keyboard. A total mystery to me and as you pay per minute, I figured it was cheaper to have him do it, although I don't remember it as being expensive at all. Have a fabulous time and I am hoping for a trip report!

The internet in Fare was pretty cheap. One morning I got on it for a few minutes to reply to my daughter who finally contacted us after a couple of emails. It was 65 XPF!
One tip if you know you're going to use email there is to Google French keyboard (or maybe it's European...I know I looked at a Spanish keyboard online before I went). I did that ahead of time so I could locate the @ key (it turned out I didn't need it as I used Gmail & had my address book in it, but it was good knowing where it was anyway). The main problem I found was I kept typing "!" for a comma (I'm pretty sure it was !). It made my emails look funny but I just let people know it would happen (I type fast so I was happy to just type my own with that silly ! showing up all through my emails).

When we were on Huahine in March of this year, there were two internet cafes located on the main street in Fare. Both are inexpensive but only one offers an American keyboard. Both internet cafes are located upstairs. The one with the American keyboard you enter through a gated drive and then take a stairway in the back of the building. This one also has computer stations on the balcony which makes it more pleasant (enclosed areas aren't airconditioned and can be stifling). Hope this helps. Sorry I cannot remember the names of the cafes.

That was the internet cafe I used and they didn't tell me they had American keyboards (mind you, this was just under 1 1/2 years ago so maybe they didn't have them then). Yes, being on the balcony is really nice, isn't it? If I remember correctly, this was the internet cafe closer to the Te Marara end of town.
