Hi All,
We are staying for a week in Moorea, I've read from other posts that they only rent very basic bikes on Moorea.
Is there anywhere on Tahiti Is. where mountain bikes can be rented and can they taken across to Moorea by ferry?
Or are there any shops that would sell 2nd hand mountain bikes ?
Worst case, does anyone know what is the cost of a made in china basic mountain bike in the equivalent of a discount store there ?
Also, would be very grateful for any information about potential trails on Tahiti or Moorea. (We are quite experienced riders)
Many thanks if anyone can assist.

Check out the vtt tahiti club's website www.freeride-tahiti.com under "photo's" you'll find the different tracks on the island of Tahiti, I don't think it is a good idea to do it by yourself experienced as you may be.
BMX type of bike (China made) around 35.000 cfp there are a few bike stores (Chinese lol) in Papeete
For 2nd hand bikes you can try looking at the "paruvendu" weekly free add paper
www.paruvendu.pf

Hello David, I was cycling in Tahiti and on Moorea in 2007, took with me my own used bike and left it there. Gave it to some friends, who (hopefully) still ride it. It was not cheap to fly with bike, I packed it into an original bike cartonage, if you want to take it back home, you should keep the packing, otherwise they don't transport it in a plane in Polynesia. Transporting from Tahiti to Moorea is no problem, by ferry or speedboat. On Tahiti I did some tours alone from Papeete to the blowholes along the coastroad, later on following the Papenoo valley uphill(easy) to the old hotel Relais Maroto, next day further up to the tunnel and down on the other side to Papara. A hard tour. from there you could ride to Teahupo along the coastroad or back to Papeete. I did not find a rental in Tahiti, but on Moorea and on the other Islands. Someone told me, its to dangerous to ride a bike on Tahiti, haha. Be free to ask, if you need more informations, have a nice day, Ursel

I was referring to the vélo tout terrain tracks -off road mountain biking, not to be confused with riding a regular bike which can be done anywhere in FP

I'm not a freerider myself, I ride a hardtail. But still a cool website. Now I just need to find a website translation engine.
Just remember everyone. When downhilling, keep you eye on the trail, not the view. Else you'll end up flying over your handle bars.
