I have decided to post this topic as I believe it to be very interesting for those who love and /or have experienced the Tuamotu archipelago some way or another, and because if refers to the “gift of life”, donation of organs which is virtually inexistent in French Polynesia…

Francis Gazeau is an old collegue of mine in Rangiroa, who received a “new heart” (and with it a new life) in 2004 and who is leaving today to spend one year on the uninhabited atoll of Tahanea in the Tuamotu’s.
With his “project, l’opération Tahanea” he wishes to draw attention to the importance of the donation of organs and to show how one can be very capable of doing virtually anything after having received such an important gift.

Francis has received the "green light" from his medical specialists in Papeete and in Paris and will be completely self supporting whilst on Tahanea but will stay in contact with the world by means of internet / email through a solar panel.

A real life "castaway"! Do you know what kind of items he is bringing with, other than a computer for e-mail?

Thank you for sharing, Poehere.
A kidney transplant saved my life just over 1 year ago, so I love to hear success stories.

Suki, sorry for your loss.

Gitbox-Dan: Glad you are fine and doing well....so good to have you back on TE.
We have organ donor designations on our driver's licenses. My best friend remains a generous blood donor.
Poehere: please keep us informed of M. Gazeau's life in the Tuamotus......does he have a website?

Gitboxdan, that is good to hear, enjoy life to the fullest!

Sorry to learn about your loss Suki, it shows how important a donation can be!

Francis left with tons of books, rice, medication, osmoseur -drinking water machine- fishing gear and camera. He will document his adventure/project which will be aired eventually here and in Europe. SInce he has lived more than 30 yrs on Rangiroa and has often "escaped" for some time onto various motu's so he's well prepared and acqainted with the harsh and isolated conditions.

Suki, sorry to hear about your loved ones.
Gitbox dan, this post & your and Suki's comments reminded me to go online and register as an organ donor on my CA driver license/DMV - I just renewed mine, and they used to have a little pink sticker to put on your license, but now you have to register online, and I wonder how many people forget/neglect to do it. Maybe the online registering makes it more "official", but I bet a lot of people just don't get around to do it.

Update, Francis is doing real well! He had a medical check up and got the green light for another 6 months to complete his 1 year goal, showing the world what one might be able to endure and accomplish thanks to the gift of life...He's filming every day to make a journal that will be turned into a 52 minute documentary to be aired internationally.

He constructed a "fare" = house in 3 months by weaving palm leaves and collecting wood on some the motu's from which he also built a relaxing fauteuil... Faa'ito'ito Francis!

Just curious since Pohere mentioned that organ transplantation is pretty much non-existent in FP, did Francis have to travel outside FP for his transplant?

Yes he got his heart transplant in Paris, but with the new HUGE hospital opening in Papeete early next year and campaigns to make people aware it may well be that in the future transplants can be done here
