Just wondering how safe it is to drive around the island on our own?
Thank you.

It's safe as long as you pay attention to the road (and that can be hard to do with the beautiful scenery!). The roads are narrow and winding and people frequently drive fast so keep both hands on the wheel & your eyes on the road. It's nice to take a 4x4 tour first so you can see everything without worrying about driving and then rent a car to return to the spots you loved as well as get groceries and/or go to restaurants.

Just watch closely for kids, dogs and pigs running out into the road.

Thanks! We're from St. Catharines, not too far from you :)

Yes, you aren't far from me! Enjoy your trip to French Polynesia. I wish I could hide in your luggage (it's so expensive to get there!).

We paid $997 CAD per person from LAX-PPT return. I thought that was really reasonable. I haven't booked our first segments yet to and from LA. Still trying to decide between departing from Buffalo for less $$$ or going direct from Toronto more more $$$. It would be nice to go direct and it is our honeymoon :)

What airline did you get that LAX-PPT return deal from? And how long a stay does that buy you?

Ditto what Denver Joe asked. I'd like to go to FP for at least 2 weeks (preferably 3), but I can't find a good price from LAX to PPT (nothing like what you found unless it's short-stay)! We managed to fly Toronto to LA for $900 Cdn (total for 2 people) 1 1/2 years ago with Air Canada (a special deal our travel agent got us).

Air Tahiti Nui. It was booked through a Canadian consolidator for travel Nov 2-12, so 10 nights.

What a deal. ATN has been seriously lacking in deals from LAX-PPT here in the US.
