LOL! I personally have never eaten there...so I have no first hand experience in prices for you. But...it does depend on what you order and what you drink. But I know it is not uncommon to spend around $300-500.

Keep in mind it is expensive pretty much anywhere you eat there.

Hi scottymac, Villa Mahana is very expensive and he doesn't take email reservations. FYI locals hardly ever eat there because of the expense and guess it is not all that much of a special thing but that is personal.
We had the royal menu and including drinks (different wines with different courses) count 500 to 600 us$ and we decided never to go again because of bad service and quality not being in line with prices charged, but again that is personal!

GOod places (reasonably priced) are BB yachtclub, Kainahut and Fare Manuia. These 3 will pick you up for free although you'd share the cab with others. The hotel can arrange for the resa and pick up. In these resto's you can eat say for under 200$ including a bottle of wine.

10 minutes walk from the dock in Vaitape is St. James, water front restaurant, quite ok although portions are small (main courses around 45 to 50 us$) and service somehow chaotic but just go with the flow so to speak

Tama'a maitai (bon appétit!)

If you can get into Villa Mahana, do it. It's VERY expensive, but when we went we had a great meal. Ask for the private table at the top of the stairs. Very romantic up there all by yourself.

Thta's great news Scotty. The fact that Damien has availability this late in the game is a sign that travel to FP truly is down significantly! Glad to hear you will score a table. Now...if you REALLY want to push your luck...try to get the "special" table up at the top. :-)

scottymac, on the main square in Vaitape (right where you get off the boat shuttle so to speak), there are roulottes (diners)at night (after 6 pm) offering steak & frites, chow mein (sort of tahitian chinese dish) waffles, burgers etc. you can eat for around 10 $/p (no alcohol).

As right now they're setting up the Heiva village on the main square, these roulottes are in front of the postoffice. Could be fun too...

Enjoy

well heck, I've made it this far, can't hurt to ask about the special table...thanks everyone.
yes it is sad (in a way) that I can get in under the tourism dilemma there, but at least I am helping the cause.

Also...take Poehere's suggestion about eating at the roulottes some evening or evenings...they have great food for really great prices...and it really adds to the experience by doing something like the locals do.

BTW scotty there are all kinds of dance practises for the Heiva going on after 4 pm (in Vaitape on the main square and just past the postoffice -lagoonside- so you'll prob hear the drums, really good fun to watch and listen to

Enjoy and have a great one!
