Does the Hilton provide snorkel gear? If so, do they charge? We don't want to have to bring our own on such a long flight from Ontario, Canada!

Even if they do provide gear, I prefer to take my own mask and snorkel. Fins are fins. Your mask will fit better than what you'd probably get at the resort and you know you're the only one who has used your snorkel.

Do you know how much a set would be if we bought them in Tahiti or Moorea? If it is not too bad, we would probably buy some there and just leave it. That is what we did in Hawaii.

Everything is VERY expensive there. They don't weigh much and don't take up much room. But, if you're worried about weight and don't mind the cost, buy them there.

All the big resorts supply them, but we took masks & snorkels on our first trip (where we stayed at resorts). We went to Canadian Tire & bought sets there very cheap. If you're at a resort, you can save luggage space by not packing fins. On our second trip (where we stayed at pensions & smaller places), we took all the pieces with us. We bought the Body Glove sets at Costco (for a good price). Having a clean snorkel and a mask that you know fits you makes snorkelling so much less stressful!

I can't say how much they cost in Moorea, but in Huahine, you can buy them right in the grocery store, not expensive, but who knows the quality. I would not want to use someone else's used snorkel. Gack! And having a mask that fits is so important. I'm not sure what you are bringing, but my hubby and I go for 3 weeks with 2 carry-on suitcases. He does take his fins, although I do not. We also take a ton of books, although we both carry "purses" . You do not need much there. Really!

I would not skimp on mask and snorkel. Compared to what you'll be paying fo everything else in FP, a good set of gear is bread crumbs. And snorkeling is one of THE best things to do. The waters are clear and marine life is beautiful. Buy them at home and make sure they fit well in the water before you leave. The small space they take up is well worth the effort.
Resort fins are ok if you have normal size feet, but I had problems with fit. Next time I will hassle with carrying fins for my big feet.

My husband is a diver, and he will gladly leave other things at home in order to bring his own gear, which includes snorkelling fins, and diving fins. At the end of the day, having your own gear is worth it.

Hi, It never fails, whenever anyone asks if a resort rents gear you get a bunch of people telling you you should bring your own.
For what it's worth, I've rented snorkel gear from many places over the years and the only problem I've had is a leaky mask, but I can usually just ignore a little water for a while, so no big deal.
The gear is always thoroughly washed. I wonder if my fellow tourists bring their own forks and spoons to restaurants? ;)
The thing to consider is that a big resort will usually charge $5 to $10 a day so it's not a good deal for more than one day. But, yeah, I'm with you, I prefer to travel light.

Hm? Perhaps things have changed, but the resorts in FP never used to charge for snorkel gear in FP. In other countries, yes, they do. But I have not seen it in FP. I'm sorry, but a leaky mask in FP would be a nightmare. I will have a leaky mask sometimes (my own) because I have missed a tiny hair from my head. As the first travel agent we had when we went to FP said, (when we started freaking about the price and started thinking of ways to economize)"Why diminish your experience?" He was so right. I also have switched to the dry snorkel which has greatly enhanced my experience with snorkeling. But for me, snorkeling is a huge part of the experience of FP. Hm? my own silverware? Something to thing about (Really, really kidding about that!)
