ISLAND OF TAHITI
This is a list of restaurants on the island of Tahiti (in the various districts) Of course there are many more but the list is limited to those places of interest to anyone visiting while on vacation so the “boring” ones have been left out. Please feel free to forward your own experience or special places to complete the list
Transportation: Contrary to other islands, on Tahiti it is not customary for restaurants to offer pick-ups (except for le Belvédère). Tahiti has public transportation by means of “Le Truck”, a wooden bus, that runs from the back of the Papeete market to Outumaoro (West coast), which is the area near the Sofitel and back to the waterfront in central Papeete, servicing mainly the following hotels: Hilton Tahiti Resort, Airport Motel, IC Beachcomber Tahiti and Sofitel Tahiti Resort.
Le Truck runs basically Monday thru Saturday from 5 am to appr. 9 pm, however there is NO fixed schedule. During day time adults pay 130 cfp/p and after 6 pm 200 cfp. It is by all means a safe way to travel and a great way to experience an authentic part of “Tahitian life” but, as virtually anywhere in the world, it is recommended to keep your valuables close to you at all times.
Taxi's are available 24/24 but negotiate your price before hopping in as they have no meters.

$ = between 0 and 1500 cfp
$$ = between 1500 and 4500 cfp (appetizer and/or main course)
$$$ = between 2000 and 6000 cfp
Smoking, FP has not (yet) adapted the (French) non-smoking laws so allowance to smoke is at the discretion of the restaurant owners... places marked with "a/c" have a non-smoking a/c area
PAPEETE “downtown”
Lou Pescadou's, tel: 43.74.26, Passage Cardella (behind Cathedrale) great pasta and pizzas, nice relaxed atmosphere. In-expensive and credit cards are accepted. A/C - $$
L’ô à la bouche, tel: 45.29.76, Passage Cardella, 2 blocks down from Cathedral, French/Tahitian gourmet dining, excellent food, expensive, A/C, $$$
Le Shabu Zen, Passage Cardella, Japanese/Taiwanese, cooking WITHOUT oil and cream, different, moderately priced, A/C, $$
Les Trois Brasseurs, tel: 50.60.25 across from ferrydock. Beer brewery with nice big outside terrace speciality: flaemmekuches (thin pizza type) International menu ranging from cheeseburger to sauerkraut, reasonably priced. Food is average, A/C, $$
Café des Négociants, tel; 48.08.48, Rue Piétonne, French, Tahitian, International, popular with locals, 2 story and small terrace on side walk, good food, nice variety, price moderate to expensive, lots of life entertainment, A/C, $$-$$$
Le Retro, centre Vaima, shopping mall at water front, nice place to have a drink (on the terrace) and watch Tahiti life passing by, average food, price moderate, $$
La Corbeille d’eau, (waterfront near temple Paofai) tel: 43.77.14 French gourmet dining, excellent food, expensive, A/C, $$$
Chez Jimmy, tel : 43.63.32, « inn place » Chinese/Vietnamese/Thai food, excellent, expensive, A/C, $$-$$$
La Villa Gourmande, tel : 42.23.42, Pont de l’Est, French gourmet dining, excellent, expensive, $$-$$$ A/C
Hotel TAHITI NUI: Le Velvet; tel: 46.38.99, Avenue Prince Hinoi, Fusion, gastronomic/creative, good food, expensive, A/C, $$-$$$
LES ROULOTTES, “downtown” Place Vaiete, waterfront. Every night after 6 pm lots of “diners, restaurants on wheels” set up their service with a great variety, from crêpes to wood fired pizzas, poisson cru, steaks, Chinese food, just pick whatever gets your fancy. (As alcohol consumption is prohibited by French laws in public places only soft- and hot drinks are served)
Inexpensive, $, great food choices and a wonderful atmosphere with lots of locals under the stars!
TAHITI WEST COAST

Le Sakura tel: 86.66.00 -located in Sofitel, Japanse (including Teppanyaki), average food (small portions), very expensive, cold atmosphere, A/C, $$$
PUNAAUIA
CENTRE MOANANUI (Carrefour and shopping mall)
Côté Jardin, (open 9 am to 8 pm, closed Sundays and public Holidays) nice menu including Tahitian specialities and lots of meat and fish dishes, excellent food, moderately priced $-$$, Good place to have lunch if shopping in the mall, walking distance from IC Beachcomber appr. 15 minutes, Sofitel 7 minutes)
MARINA TAINA (just past Carrefour heading South, 3 restaurants, very popular with locals also for “happy hours” and evening entertainment)
La Casa Bianca, tel: 43.91.35 (same owner as 3 Brasseurs, great draught beers) Italian/French/International food, nice setting in the middle of the yachting marina. food average, price moderate, $$
Le Quai des Îles, French/Latino, nice setting, food average, price moderate, $$
Pink Coconut, next to Le Quai des îles, Tahitian/French food, food average, price moderate, $$
PUNAAUIA SOUTH
Le Coco’s, tel: 58.21.08 (PK 12) French gourmet dining, speciality: seafood, foie gras. Beautiful setting right on the lagoon, very expensive, food excellent, small portions, A/C, $$$$$$$ (lol)
Western Grill, (PK 11,5) (3 brasseurs so good for draught beer) informal, TexMex/grill, inside dining only, lots of meat on the menu, food average, moderately priced, $$
Blue Banana, tel: 41.22.24, (PK 11) Funky place on the waterfront, (PK 11) in- and outside dining, French, food average, expensive, A/C, $$
LE MERIDIEN, Le Carré, tel: 47.07.34, French gourmet dining under the stars, good food, expensive, $$-$$$

Chez Myriam, rond point Tautira, French/Tahitian/Chinese, excellent value for money, reasonably priced, $-$$, simple but good! (Cops lunch here) good stop when doing the island tour by rental car

ARUE
Le Beach House, tel: 82.56.56 French and local, good food, moderately priced, $-$$, great setting on beach down from le Tahara’a. Good place to go when staying at Radisson or for having lunch and a swim on black sand beach

Peohere - this is great information - thank you. On our very last night in FP we are on Tahiti and want a really special & memorable dinner.... So.. I was thinking of Le Coco as I heard it was really nice.... However, you now scared me with all those dollar signs :) I don't mind paying a few bucks for a nice experience and good food - my question is... is Le Coco a good choice for this?

Lorio, le Coco's is great although it does hurt the wallet lol
count around 2000 cfp for an appetizer, 4500 cfp main course and 1500 cfp dessert, good reasonable bottle of wine from 4500 cfp upwards, they do have a 3 course menu as well for around 7000 cfp, but heck in French they say "quand on aime on ne compte pas" - "when you love you don't count the cost" LOL
Service is kind of formal and atmosphere rather à la French Côte d'azur than Polynesian.
If you decide to go there make a resa in time and ask for a window table lagoon side and make sure you have time for pre-dinner drinks in the garden!
It really depends on what is important for you, the best food or the best ambiance/atmosphere/location ?

Hi Peohere - Well..... we want good food - doens't really have the be THE BEST... ambiance & atmosphere and a nice wine though would rate pretty high for us... Is the garden quite nice?

IMHO on of the nicest locations is/was the beachfront restaurant at the Royal Tahitien. Have a drink, watch the sun go down behind Moorea as all the joggers run the beach, have dinner.
Is it still there? Food and service OK?

poehere , i love the bit about , the cops lunch at chez miriam , taravao , i would be eating my lunch while siting next to the gendarmerie scoffing a bottle of red wine in uniform during the middle of the day then going to breath test all the cars driving thru puunuia

gary & cath i was project manager on building a 78 ft tuna fishing boat it was run by the mayor of vairo , we also built a 23 ft cntr console boat for the then president of tahiti Gaston floss , i got to meet him a few times & he smoothed over the problems i had with the french embassy here in oz it was a pretty big deal with lots of meetings in the chambre of comerce
ppt it was also the largest boat ever built in tahiti
as far as visa goes i think i might be still classed as a resident ??
