Village Temanuata & Hotel Matira - any experience?

My girlfriend and I will be in Bora Bora from 24 - 27 December this year (Christmas!) and are currently looking for accommodation.
We had wanted to stay in an over-water bungalow but the prices are pretty steep, so are now looking at the more realistic low to mid-range places.
Village Temanuata and Hotel Matira ((in a Beach bungalow in both) seem pretty nice, and not too expensive. Does anyone have any experience of these places?
We don't need TV or internet, just a peaceful, preferably private (or less-used beach), good service and good food nearby or in the hotel. Not too many hidden costs. We'd plan to have a bike with us, to travel around the island a bit more freely.
Thanks,
Jamie Kennerley

Hi Jamie, Welcome to the forum. We stayed at Hotel Matira one of our trips to Bora Bora. We originally booked a beach bungalow. It was very nice, and a good value. However, I could not sleep at night due to the traffic on the road just behind these beach bungalows (I couldn't believe it either). The are situated at some sort of turn in the road, anyway it was noisier than you'd expect. We asked if there was a garden bungalow available and they kindly allowed us to move down the way. Well, our garden bungalow was literally 5 feet off the beach. It was just perfect and we loved it. It seems there were a few of them available there similarly situated. Have a great time.

Hi Kath,
Thanks for this. That really is a surprise about the traffic noise at Matira!
The Temanuata gets only good write-ups on Trip Advisor, so we may try there too, although we wanted something different in Bora Bora to the kind of place we plan to be in in Huahine.
To be honest, we'd love to stay in an over-water bungalow, especially with it being Christmas time, but the prices are truly enormous, as you know. But then what would seem to be the height of luxury, so I should expect that. There don't seem to be any budget versions of the OWB's either.
We'll keep researching, but may yet come back to the Matira. Especially as they're the only people so far who have repsonded to email (we wrote in French, too!). May have to start making some calls soon...

Aloha Jamie, I would give the Sofitel on Bora Bora a look. My cousin and I stayed there in March '08, and while it wasn't in an overwater bungalow, we really enjoyed the location, the peacefulness, the kindness of the employees, and the broad beach. I can't wait to go back! You could always go with a garden bungalow right off the beach, as Kath suggests, rather than overwater. We were able to do that at the Sofitel in Moorea and it was gorgeous, plus it saved us some $$. Note: The garden bungalows here do back up to the road so there is slight road noise in the mornings and evening but I stress, that is only in the back of the property. It wasn't that bad to us but some people find it annoying. Have fun!

Ia Orana Jamie, Hotel Matira is right on the "corner" of the main circle island road and the one going into the point matira, so yes the road side bungalows will get all the noise and there are quite a lot of cars in BB. The hotel matira used to have a restaurant as well, just down the road on the public Matira beach. This restaurant is now operated by other people and is very expensive... just so you know that it is completely seperated from the hotel!
Temanuata has 2 locations: 1 on the mountainside across from the public Matira beach and 1 on the pointe matira itself (next to LeMoana beachcomber)
FYI tourism is so very low that you should really try get a good deal for an OWB like at the Maitai or so (budget version...) but places like the BB lagoon resort and Le Moana beachcomber offer "pay 3 stay 5" so it may work out not to be too expensive spread out over 5 days?
There is also a sort of "eco" hotel on the large motu where you have the Meridien, Thalasso, the hotel is called Eden beach but you'd be away from the main island and would rely on shuttle service to and from...
Email, please know that usuage of internet/email is not really a regular custom here yet as anywhere else and so it may take a while for people (especially the smaller accommodations) to reply

Hi again Jamie, I just read your reply and the others following. As I said, we are traveling to BoraBora again this October, for the 5th time. Once you go, you will most probably need to go again. Our first trip in '99 we did a 401k loan and really did it up---4 & 5 star resorts on 5 islands in 16 days. Bora Bora was our favorite. If there is any way you can swing it, go for an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora for a couple of nights. We don't do that any more but are SO glad we did! You may be able to get a better deal if you stay at a chain hotel like Sofitel or Intercontinental on both Moorea and Bora Bora. Our OWB's were less than the published rate when we stayed with the same hotel on two different islands. We have stayed at the Moore Sofitel (before the remodel) and LOVED it. Sounds like the Bora Bora one is great, too. Maybe that would work?

We stayed at the Sofitel Motu on one of those 4 for 3 specials and we really liked it. The boat to the mainland and Sofitel hotel is only about five minutes and an easy trip. The snorkeling in the Coral Gardens, where other hotels and tours take their snorkel trips, is fabulous-one day we took out a kayak and went around the island and tied up to one of the anchors used by the tour boats (go early before they arrive) and one day we just walked around the island (water shoes or fin booties required). Breakfast was included and it was quite a spread. I think we were the only Americans and the only NON honeymooners at the hotel and we were invited to one of the couples' wedding at the top of the motu--really lovely.

Only nowadays Sofitel motu serves the meals at the main sofitel but that shouldn't spoil the pleasure as it guarantees a nice short (romantic :)) lagoon ride back to "your" little island

In case anyone's still reading this... (!) we took the plunge and are staying in an OWB at the Sofitel Motu for 3 nights. Can't wait!
