Hi there,
My girlfriend and I will be in Huahine from 21st - 24th December this year. We seem to have heard nothing but good things about Chez Tara, as both a Pension and restaurant.
Can't find any way of contacting them however, aside from a telephone, which we can do of course.
Anyone stayed there and can reinforce the good words or otherwise? Anyone also have an email or website address?
Thanks,
Jamie Kennerley

I don't have time to try and look it up right now. I had to have my daily Tahiti fix before I leave on errands. Chez Tara is indeed a great restaurant. On my trip report, I do have a picture of the place at Chez Tara where you stay. Just look under trip reports and find my name. It's the last one as we went at Christmas this year. We plan on going at Christmas again this year. The beach is absolutely fabulous. If indeed you want this place, I would book early as every year we have gone, it has been booked. It is on the little island, so you would be pretty much eating at restaurants as the stores there don't have that much, but there are fruit stands around. Having said that, the place to stay is very basic, although inches from the beach. It is right next to Relais Mahana, a very beautiful resort. Perhaps you could email them for a phone number. At any rate, I do have a book of the Pensions of Polynesia, and I will look later this evening to see if there is contact info in there. If you have any other questions, ask away. You might want to ask if they cooking facilities as well, as food in restaurants especially on the little island is very expensive. You might want to think about staying on the larger island which has a large grocery store, or to cut costs and perhaps be able to rent a car one day to get groceries, you might consider Huahine camping which has cooking facilities and is on a beautiful beach. The owner has the traditional medicinal plants and tress of Polynesia on his property. The cost for camping is about $14 US a night and there is no tent required. He has little buildings to sleep in.

In case you already read my response above, I am now adding some changes. I cannot find anything on Chez Tara in the pension book that I have. Huahine camping does have a tent area, so the camping fee is probably the $14 and the buildings would be more, but how much more I do not know. Maybe something like $30-$40 a night (I'm only guessing) Vaihonu is listed and that is on the larger island, I also have pictures of that on my trip report. It really isn't a swimming beach as the reef comes close to shore, but it is very beautiful. There is camping as well as buildings and a kitchen. It's close enough to town to bike to the store. There is also Chez Guynette which has private rooms as well as a dorm which is very inexpensive. A kitchen as well , steps from a beautiful beach and steps from the grocery store. If you want the beach, the places on the little island are superior, but then the food is an issue. Christmas is the high season, so I would book as soon as possible. Tourism is down down down, but the pensions seem to have business, as far as I could tell. We stay at the Villas Bougainville, and he was totally booked last Christmas to the point that he had on overflow to a relatives property and he rented out his own home. A lot of Tahitians travel at that time as well as people from France. Our plane was booked solid as well as our flight to Huahine was filled solid.

Hi Holte,
That's all really helpful, thanks. Gives me a picture of Huahine at Christmas time, which certainly seems incredibly popular! Also interesting to hear about the beach being quite reefy, which we didn't realise. I've read a little about Chez Guynette so I'll look into a bit more. Will also look into the little island, if you say the beaches are better. It's quite important for us to have a decent beach for swimming.

Here is a website of pensions in all of FP. It might help in finding inexpensive lodging.

Thanks. One more thing - is the beach at Chez Tara really no good for swimming? I'd read plenty of good things but no-one mentioned that the beach was a bit 'hostile', shall we say, due to the reef! You'd recommend staying on Huahine Iti if we want beautiful beaches and swimming?

Sorry-I guess I'm not very clear on my writing. Chez Tara is on the little island and the beach is FABULOUS!!!!!!If you look at my pictures on the trip report, you can see it. Perhaps they are from Christmas the year before. We have been there twice at Christmas-a lot of fun for us. Vaihonu and Chez Guynette are on the bigger island. Vaihonu is beautiful, but the reef is right there. Chez Guynette is across the street from the water and in the heart of downtown Huahine-Fare. Downtown is three blocks long, with water on one side. You have to walk to the beach from the Guynette, but it's about one block along the beach to the best part of the beach. I have pictures of that beach as well. Vaihonu is biking distance from downtown. I have pictures of Vaihonu as well on the trip report. Downtown has more reasonably priced restaurants as well as the roulottes which are extremely reasonable. I have pictures of the roulottes as well which are vans where you can purchase food. The owners cook on a grill in the van or outside. Downtown is the place where there is more activity, but you are not directly on a swimming beach, although plenty of people do swim there. It's just not as nice as the beach about a block down. There are hardly any people on the public beach. The most I've seen is maybe about 10. You have to decide what it is that is the most important for you and then decide on the accommodations. There is no bad place on Huahine. Some just have different features which include price, car, boat, on the beach, etc. Chez Tara and Huahine Camping are on the little island. Vaihonu and Chez Guynette on the big island. If you are on the little island, biking would be very difficult to get to the big island because you have to go up and down the "mountain". Very steep. I am not trying to steer you one direction or the other-merely trying to give you info which meets your expectations. These are also not the only places to stay, but the ones that I feel may meet your price range and needs of beach. So just ask away.
