Hey Peter! My husband and I are thinking about a trip to Maldives and/or Seychelles for our 25th anniversary in 2011. Any advice? Islands to see or places to stay? The anniversary is May, but do you have any recommendation on the best month to go? Thanks for any info you might be able to provide :) Kath

Hi Kath! I've never been to Seychelles, so I cannot give any comments on that, but it will be in our itinerary in August 2010!
For Maldives, the best time to get there is during the dry season (also high season) between December and April, but the room rates are often much more expensive than wet season. We went twice out of 5 times in wet season in June, and the room rate was only 3/5 or 2/3 of the rate in dry season, and we didn't come across any rain during daytime (only rained at night), probably due to global climate changes. However, one time we went there during dry season in December but it rained couple of days in a one week stay, so it really depends on your luck.
Every resort in Maldives occupies a single island. The size of the island is like the size of a small islet in Bora Bora (like Sofitel Motu), so mostly you can circle the island by walking in less than 15 mins. There are many resorts (more than 60) for you to choose from, some are very..very famous for snorkeling, some are famous for being luxury, some are very close to the Male city (capital city of Maldives), so it can be easily reached by speedboat. Some are further away and you need inter-island flight to get there from Male by seaplane.
Unlike Bora Bora, Moorea and most of the atolls in FP, you will get stuck in a resort (an island) for the entire stay in Maldives, and you won't be able to visit other places and dine at different restaurants like what we usually do in Moorea or Bora Bora, but you can join some excursions for visiting local fishing village, snorkeling trip, etc.
why not going to FP again? There are many atolls in FP and seems it will take forever to visit all of them. At least this is what we are intending to do. haha...

Peter-- Thank you for the Maldives information! I usually buy a travel guide a year or so ahead of time so I can research a trip, but it's best to hear from people who have been there.
We are actually going to FP again this October! It's our 5th trip. No atolls this time as we are taking my mom and my nephew---just too cost prohibitive with that many people. We have a week each in Moorea and Bora Bora, though, and I've been dying to get my mom to come with us.
Mike and I tend to find a great place and keep going back. This summer was our 11th trip to the Canadian Rockies for tent camping and hiking. I look forward to that trip as much as I do to our trips to FP, believe it or not. We did try Belize in the spring of 2008. It was a lovely trip, but I enjoyed the "mountains" more than the sea. We are divers, and the water was not nearly as clear as FP, and not nearly as many fish. The people were fantastic and they all take such pride in their history---everyone we talked to was very educated about their history, land/crops, and government.
Thank you again for the info about Maldives. Enjoy the Seychelles, too!

One thing you need to know, Kath, about The Maldives, is that it is occupied by a majority religion - this is the MAIN reason we will not go there since 9-11 and 10-12. I know I shouldn't say this - especially on a forum - but that is where we stand on principle. This is one of the main reasons why we love FP so much - everyone is accepted for who they are and it doesn't matter where you come from or what religion you are - it's just thanks for visiting our beautiful islands and please come again. How wonderful the world would be if everyone thought this way??

yeah, Gary & Cath, I know what you mean and I don't blame you for that, but it seems the religion in Maldives is not as tough and straight as those Middle East countries since tourist industry is the major income of Maldives.
