I actually seem to prefer the snorkeling at the Pearl (stonefish, octopi, morays, eagle rays, banded pipefish, scorpionfish, and alot of 'standard' fish) to the diving anywhere I have been taken on the north side near the passes. Any specific operator or dive site I should request??

We dove a few weeks ago with the Moorea Blue dive center right there at the Pearl. We did two morning dives - the first at the Canyon dive site and then at the Coral Wall. We agreed that the variety of fish/creatures that we spotted right off the bunaglows at the Pearl were on par or even better than what we saw on our dives. We spent most of our afternoons diving around the Pearl. However, we still love diving and getting a chance to check out the black tip and lemon sharks in Moorea was awesome!

Lagoons are kinda like that - they attract the fish away from the predators. Snorkeling the lagoon is for the fish. Diving outside the reef is for the corals and/or the larger fish.

For the most awesome dives the Tuamotu's is really the place to go.

Been to Rangi, Tikehau, Nuku Hiva, and Hiva Oa. This time we have to stay on Moorea to catch our 26 day cruise back to Ft Lauderdale, so I might just dive with the Blue at teh Pearl. Can't recall the names of the old Frenchman and his wife who own/run it, but they were nice enough. Maybe can drum up some interest in a "shore dive" right off the OWBs. I've been with the lemons outside the reef multiple times, really cool but looking for something different. This is not a diving trip, anyway.
BTW: how does the snorkeling at the HIlton/Motu Iti compare with the Pearl? As many creatures? Also eagle rays like at the Pearl?
Also, are any of the dive sites off the west shore different?

Hi Mike. You may want to check out the Tiki dive. Pretty cool with lots of sharks. I'll be there in a couple of weeks, so I'll take plenty of photos for the non-divers.

Mike, you mean the Moorea Blue Diving center... and Philippe Molle, he lost his wife and is doing something else now but the center is still open.
