Rod- I hope with the melt down that your job is secure. I know the state pension funds are not in good shape. I really have no idea of what Calpers is going to do... It would be most excellent to raise your kids on the islands, and have them see part of the world you love so much!

BarbiJKM, going through some old posts and found this one. As you know, the twins arrived on July 29, which is the same day you posted in this thread for me. I'm sure you understand why I didn't respond in a timely manner. However, we're still sipping away at our Coco Vanille and Mangue Avatea, and thinking of you and our longing to return to FP. Just discovered last night that it only takes 40,000 One Pass points on Continental to get to FP from Hawaii (probably on Air NZ through Auckland). Got to see if United MP miles can be used since both are *Alliance members.

Justine, our State of Hawaii Retirement fund has recovered about 75% of the losses (about $2 billion) since summer of 2008. Our one year returns ending June 30 came in slightly better than Calpers. My job is secure - I think - but there are furloughs impacting all state workers and many other government and educational juridictions including public school teachers. Not a good situation for any of us.

I'd love to manage pension money in FP but I'd probably need to be French and speak the language :). It can be challenging living on an island. Yet it's fairly easy to live here in Hawaii because it's really just an extension of Southern California (so says some locals). We even have a Nordstrom and The Old Spaghetti Factory.

Rod-
I just saw your reply. Great to hear that the fund has recovered so nicely! Those furloughs could hit anywhere, but they'd be foolish to do it to the fund department when you're so reliant on the bond markets. Bonds need to be babysat, unlike the equities desks. Any idiot on an equities desk could make money most of the time. That routing for 40,000 miles makes you realize that you'd definitely be paying the price for the trip!

Between the market and Madoff, Calpers has some 'splanin to do to their retirees... But then again, so do most of the large foundations in the US.

I need to check around Honolulu this weekend for some Tahiti Drink. I'd love to take some to the Four Seasons on Lana'i, which is my destination next week. Has anyone found it on the mainland? If anyone had it here in HI, it would be the liquor shop at Ward Warehouse.

Justine2-don't forget our own homegrown Tom Petters of Sun Country who takes a second place only to Bernie Madoff.

I think of him when I am in FP and think of all of the schemes people have there to cheat people out of their money.
