Hi guys,
Our FP trip this Christmas is rapidly coming together... We're going to be on Tahiti from 30th December to 2nd Jan, our last port of call before flying back to the UK. We'll have been more beachy up to that point, so we're happy to explore the town of Papeete for a few days to finish up.
We've found what looks like a nice place to stay out in Mahina, a Chambre d'hote, for a very reasonable price. We're just wondering about our distance from Papeete, how feasible it is to be out that way. Especially if we do something in the city centre to celebrate the New Year. Clearly we'd be looking at an expensive taxi ride back in the early hours for that one!
Papeete's going to be the more budget of our accommodation, but we want to avoid ending up in a depressing little hostal, so we figured this more self-sufficient option looked good, although it's out of town.
Would we be shooting ourselves in the foot, so to speak?
Maybe there's interesting stuff to do in the Mahina area too?
Thanks,
Jamie

Hmmmm, if it is the one I think it is, it is way up in an area called Mahinarama which is a new residential area above Mahina itself, so you'd be stuck up on the mountain so to speak and traffic going to and from Papeete is absolutely horrendous at rush hour and during the day as they're remodelling the only and main access road from Papeete to Mahina.
Mahina has a nice (black) beach, the old lighthouse at the Point Venus, king's tomb, so it is an interesting area.... but personally I would not want to be stuck there unless I had my own wheels and be totally independant for transportation
There are better chambres d'hôtes around I think and closer to the "action"

Okay, that's good advice. It probably is that one, as it's on a few listing pages. Thanks for that. We'll look for something a little closer to town. That was our hunch, but it's good to have it confirmed.

I think I read somewhere of a € 85 rate for the Royal Tahitian, that is on a black sand beach just East of Papeete... nothing real fancy but a truly wonderful bar and resto right on the beach and very close to town
