Hello dear forum friends - haven't been on the forum or even lurked for some time. Our tentative trip back to FP has been tabled due to my mom's fragile health. Instead we will go to Hawaii for a couple weeks where we can get home quickly if we have to and can use our regular cell phones. We need to start planning - want to go the end of October and into the first 2 weeks of Nov. Yikes! It quickly approaches!
We would like to stay at smaller resorts or even pension-type accomodations. I guess in the US that would mean bed and breakfasts. So I asked myself - who would be able to help us find this type of place and I thought of all you world travelers who have been to both FP and Hawaii.
The islands we think we want to visit are: Oahu, Maui and Hawaii. I'm afraid visiting Kauai will make me too homesick for Moorea, so will save it for another trip.
Can any of you give us some suggestions? Sure would appreciate it. It will give us a good starting point for our search.

I would look for a condo rental, at least on Maui -- some good deals are out there, and they are usually very well-located and nicely equipped with a full kitchen.
I'm sure RodJune will be by to help!

We have rented from both of those websites, however not in Hawaii. We have had fabulous luck with them. You can google earth the place to see it in situ once you select some.

I would also suggest Craigslist, I found some nice places listed on Kauai. But if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Trip is booked paid for - thanks for your suggestions. Oct. 28 - Nov. 13. Am trying to be a good sport about not getting to go to FP and the Cooks. That trip will be for another year, I guess. The last place we stay - on the N. Shore of Oahu - sounds a bit like the laid back atmosphere of Tahiti, but I'm going to try not to compare. Everyone says no to, or I'll be disappointed. At least we'll be staying right on the beach with the coconut palms overhead, not in a 20 floor high rise at Turtle Bay Resort.

Next time you go to Kauai I highly recommend the Fern Grotto Inn www.ferngrottoinn.com
Very nicely furnished property for the price and just my style.

Sorry I've been absent. The twins are really sucking my internet time from me. Kane'ohe Bay on O'ahu will remind you of Mo'orea. You better go to Maui or the Big Island. There's a lot of homes you can rent in Maui. Big controvesy over rentals as some are located in controlled neighborhoods where locals are complaining about short term visitors. My opinion is we need all of the tourists we can get to boost our sagging economy. Check out the internet or realty companies through the internet. Lots of availability with tourism so far down, which means good deals.
