I really enjoyed listening to the local musicians while in FP. My only knowledge prior to visiting FP of polynesian music was Don Ho and "Tiny Bubbles". I really enjoyed what I heard while in FP, but didn't think about picking up a CD or two before returning home. Anyway, just wondering if there are different styles of polynesian music between the different islands (FP, Hawaii, etc.)? Is the traditional the same or different between islands? Is the more modern, such as Don Ho, similar or different between islands?
What makes me ask this is that a version of a song I've always loved I never realized was done by a Hawaiian until the other day when a friend and I were chatting and sent me a link to Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and his version of "Over the Rainbow".

I never realized that I was hearing a ukelele and not a guitar (but I'm also no musical expert). Just love the song since it's both very inspiring and happy, but is also perfect for the sad moment.

Hi Spot,
I find the music is definitely different between different islands. The further apart the cultural roots, the more disparate the musical styles. I have music from many of the Polynesian islands and if I were to play different songs from different locales, even if someone didn't know where they were from, I think they could certainly appreciate the different styles. I find that this diference applies to both the traditional music as well as the more contemporary music.
P.S. IZ was a great Hawaiian artist and, in my opinion, his Somewhere Over the Rainbow/ What a Wonderful World medley is one of the world's great songs.

Thanks islandboy
I think it's now time for me to expand my music horizons and get a new collection going. Any good suggestions for Tahitian traditional and contemporary music?

Hi Spotbeagle,
My favorites are actually the groups that mix a more contemporary sound with some traditional instruments and Polynesian lyrics. My favorites for a more traditional sound are Te Ava Piti and Te Aho Purotu. Those artists use a lot of Tahitian ukulele which I love. For a more contemporary sound; Fenua, New Generation, Tapuarii, Sabrina, Bobby Holcomb and Angelo are all good. Also, some of my very favorite music is from 2 groups/artists from Rapa Nui - Matato'a and Enrique Icka. You can also check out a group called Te Vaka, a group from New Zealand with Maori roots. They put a contemporary twist on music from Tuvalu, Tokelau, and Samoa.
I'm sure Barbi has most of the same stuff I do but if you have an interest in anything, just let me know.

I wholeheartedly agree Barbi - he's a very generous guy. Especially appreciated this year, since without this year's trip, I won't have a chance to stock up on any new music.
