Has anyone been to the new Manava Suites on Tahiti and tried the snorkeling there? I'd love to know what it's like. I know it won't be super-primo, but I'm wondering if it a) exists and b) is worth a quick dip. Thanks!

You can always dip in... nothing direct down the small beach you'd need to swim out towards the reef, just be aware there is at certain times and especially the weekend quite some boat traffic in front of the Manava going up and down the coastal line and it is located near a pass through the reef so watch the currents

Yikes, doesn't sound like snorkeling is one of the attractions of Manava Suites. But the facility looks new and quite nice! Where is a good spot to snorkel on Tahiti?

The manava built sort of 2 fake "motu's" at the end of the pontoons which create like a secure swim area but in the same area there is a va'a (piroque) club, training daily and resto's like Blue Banana where people go on their jetski or boat as well as private properties with boat traffic. Manava has a beautiful view over Moorea and indeed it is a brandnew property so the green déco needs to grow some...
People snorkel around the owb's of the hotels on the west coast (n-east all being black sand)or around the south area of Tahiti and on Tahiti iti which are pretty quiet. All diving trips are done outside the reef, so I guess for snorkling it is not the most attractive island

I was interested in the secure swim area (I realize it won't be fabulous, but for a quick swim? maybe). Tahiti doesn't seem to offer much in the way of snorkeling excursions. We did find that the dive shop at the Tahiti Intercontinental will take you about 2 minutes offshore from their shop to a plane wreck that is situated in some wonderful corals-- I believe it was about 4500 cfp/person for snorkellers? We've done it twice and loved it. Very easy and rewarding. Snorkeling off the deep overwater bungalows was also nice, but not spectacular by any stretch of the imagination. We've also heard that the snorkeling by Le Meridien's overwater bungalows is quite good (reports from folks we met, so take that for what it's worth).
We're spending just two nights there (and get there around 7:30-8:00 p.m. our first night), so it's really just transit for us. I was just wondering if there was anything worth hopping into the water there for-- guess that will be my homework assignment!

Yes! We took the kids with us to FP in March-April of 2008 and we won't go again until April 2010. My first book releases TODAY, so I've been sort of off-radar the last 15 months or so, what with signing with an agent, landing a contract and then doing revisions, revisions, revisions. The current economy has not been kind to the NYC market either. Fortunately, however, I write beach reads (paranormal romance), so now my new ambition is to find my books in the hotel libraries (altho I suppose that just might indicate that I was bad enough that somebody couldn't be bothered to bring me home...)

Thank you! We moved up to Walnut Creek-- better schools and a house that didn't need 150K in rehab. I still have a day job though-- for right now, the writing is for paying for Tahiti ;) I think I read too many of those Good Housekeeping articles that said you just had to hold your nose and jump on it... next dream would be living on an island..... Hmm.... wonder where that could be? ;)
