If this is the hotel I am thinking about, I believe it's just south of the Sofitel Marara. A guy who went diving with us was staying there and I asked him how it was and he said it was "pretty good, but he saw other places that looked nicer". My husband and I ate dinner one night at their beach restaurant and enjoyed it. We had the coconut parrotfish and it was really good, a little plain, but fresh and good. I would go to the restaurant again.
From the outside it looked very nice, just probably not as luxurious as some of the others. It was in a great location. Convenient to shops and nice beaches. Sorry, I don't know much else about the resort.

Le Maitai has a website at http://www.lemaitai.com
I'll be staying there in 11 weeks and from what I can gather. It is not a luxury place, but nor is it a pension. I found it to have the cheapest over water bungalows on BB. Which has allowed us stretch our visit to three weeks and take in Rangiroa.

We stayed at Le Maitai last Feb. We loved it. We were in an overwater bungalow and watched the sunrise over the motu ever morning and in the evening we walked down the road to Matira beach and watched the sunset. There was great snorkelling right off the bungalow deck and we used the kayaks and paddled out to the Coral Gardens to snorkel also. The service was good and we got lots of help from staff for excursions. The restaurant on the beach for lunch was great. Easy walk to groceries, restaurants and shops. We had the kids with us so staying at Le Maitai allowed us to get 2 overwater bungalows (1 for kids other for us). We expected 3 star when we went but were more than pleased with everything.

We stayed at LeMaitai in September '99 and it was just fine for us. we stayed three nights in an overwater, then four nights in the hotel rooms up on the hill..with airconditioning. There were several people there who love the hotel rooms (probably for their airconditioning,) but I didn't like the noise from the road. It was absolutely beautiful to sit on the deck and look at the beautiful water, the overwater bungalows (check the website) and the Sofitel Motu, but the sound of the motor scooters, trucks and cars going by was quite annoying. I would choose an overwater outside bungalow or a beach bungalow the next time.

We stayed there in March and would definitely go back! While Le Maitai is not a 5-star hotel, it was definitely nicer than we were expecting for a 3-star. We stayed in an OW bungalow and the views are definitely great! We could see the Sofitel Motu, Coral Gardens and the Beachcomber OWs from our bungalow. Our room was very clean and a good size. Of course, there are bigger OW on the islands, but again, we did not expect much after coming from the Beachcomber Moorea. The Tiare Market is within walking distance as well as other local restaurants/hotels. You can rent bicycles and go to Vaitape in the am and relax and snorkel in the afternoon. I had never been snorkeling before, so I don't have much to compare it's snorkeling too, but there was enough fish to keep us in the water for hours at a time! :-)
The staff is very friendly and will help you to get around to restaurants (Bloody Marys) and other activities/excursions. They don't have an ice machine, but if you like your beer cold, I'd suggest bringing a small, compact cooler to chill 2-3 drinks at a time. It seemed a little weird to them, but they went ahead and gave us some ice from the bar in the afternoon. Yes, the OW had a small refridgerator, but it only keeps the food/drinks "cool", not "COLD".
We would definitely stay there again, but next time get an AC room. While the OWs offered a nice ocean breeze, there were times (especially in the afternoon) when the AC would have been very welcomed. The ocean breeze doesn't get too far onto the island (all the tropical plants), so dinner was a little "sticky" on nights, but that goes for most of the restaurants on the islands. We are definitely sticking with the AC rooms on the next trip!
Good Luck!

Carol, Did you stay in the ocean view hotel rooms or the garden view? I'm confused, on the maitai site map it doesn't look like their are roads in front of the hotel rooms. Is there really that much traffic in Bora Bora? How crowded is Bora Bora?
