Fare Aute is really nice but away from it all! You'll need a car to do what ever you'd want to do.
If JP's book says they don't speak English... most Tahitians who run a pension speak basic English as JP speaks basic French and a smile will get you anywhere here!

Hi we've stayed at Haapiti surf lodge a few times. Perfect for a surfer, there are also kayaks provided. But its pretty far away from everything. There are kitchens. Have also stayed at Marks Place - but it would not be my 1st choice.

Hey Joan. Might want to think twice about kayaking in Australia these days - especially in and around Portland, Victoria. This story sounds a bit suss to me, as I am a diver and know how the feeding patterns work for sharks - he was looking for an easy feed on a "slow" seel (a sea kayak would look like a seel from underwater).
The fact that the shark allegedely bit his kayak then dissappeared, then all of a sudden Mr Gadsden knew the colour of his eyes and the fact that the shark "headbutted me" sounds a bit suspect to me. 4 metre Great White's don't "headbutt" - they eat. Not the last we'll hear of THIS one.
Jaws the movie has returned!

That's why I like the lagoons of French Polynesia! I don't go in the water as much here in Hawaii because of the Tiger sharks. Usually our surfers show off their boards with the teeth marks. I'm surprised there wasn't a picture. You're going to be there soon right? Have a great trip.
