Well, the Tahitian flu is MUCH stronger than the H1N1...Mike & I watched our many hours of video of our trip last May on the weekend and decided to start planning for a 3rd trip, maybe November (2010).

We are thinking of going back to Raimiti on Fakarava, but also looking at visiting additional "off the beaten track" islands/atolls.

Anyone with comments/experience on Ahe/Mataiva/Tikehau (Tuamotu) and Maupiti? Any other islands/atolls you have visited and worth the detour? We're not looking for high end resorts, more the Raimiti-type experience. The Australes, Gambiers?

Something that still puzzle me...the mosquitos...Where are they and when? The 2 trips we did were both in May and no bugs..anywhere. Are they coming out in November? ;0) Lorio, Gary & Cath will be there at that time so I'm anxious to know if the little critters are buzzing around.

Thank you!!

Yes, we had mosquitoes both times in November (they aren't at the big resorts because the resorts spray, but they're at smaller places and, especially, inland). We found they came out at dusk at Raimiti so we just kept the Muskol handy & sprayed each other at the first sign of them.

Andie, there's a thread in "Huahine" about a Raimiti-accommodation-type pension there you might want to check out. I love Huahine and if you haven't been there, why not try it? Or look into the Aranui "cruise"...it hits a lot of the outer islands.

Hi OW, thanks for the tip. I'll check out Huahine too. I heard about the Aranui but my problem with "cruise" is that they don't stay long enough in one place for my taste!

Where did you stay on Huahine?

I would recommend Huahine over Maupiti.

Andie, we stayed at Rande's Shack on Huahine and loved it. Rande and his wife have a house on the lagoon and 2 bungalows in their very large backyard (one is one-bedroom and the other is two-bedroom). It's a 12-minute (or so) walk along the beach into town or you can use the free bikes to bike in. The snorkelling out front is excellent, there's a shaded shelter overlooking the lagoon for the guests to use (we were the only guests when we were there) that has 2 hammocks, a table and a long bench, and there are washing machines in each bungalow (and clotheslines). The full kitchen is well-equipped, the rooms are huge and the air flows through the rooms well (and there are overhead fans, too), and there's plenty of hot water in the shower (something I missed at Raimiti). Rande's great (we didn't get a chance to meet his wife since she was in hospital when we stayed there). If/when we go back to FP, we'd like to stay there for a few weeks (we loved it that much)!

Huahine vs. Maupiti. Huahine has a lot to do and is very beautiful. I don't think that Maupiti has that much going on. It's good for a day trip, I have heard from a friend that went there after she went to Huahine. Maupiti is beautiful, of course.

By the way, I am still waiting for my son to make a copy of the Bobby Holcomb tape for you.

Hi Andie, we nearly always go in November but we stay at the big resorts so we don't usually see any mossies. And I also think that the creepy crawlies seem to prefer hanging around the garden/beach bungalows (rather than the OWB) because that is really their natural environment I guess :)

I read a trip report written by a French woman on another website about Vainui Perles on Manihi. Probably more rustic than Raimiti and less accomodation privacy, but you do get the various excursions to other parts of the atoll. The owner of the pension runs a small pearl farm. The author thought the food there was simple but delicious. Cost of the pension was reasonable.

although we haven't been there yet (going March 2010) Au Motu Mahare looks great-check them out and see if it's an "option" for you! it's a private motu just off Huahine (close enough to swim to the mainland/rustic yet......)They have bikes and kayaks free for use and are very reasonably priced.
