we are coming in from Germany, but we would like to know if the prices in the supermarket for suncremes, oils, etc, are similar to the prices in the states.

thanks!

Sunscreen is much more expensive in FP than in the USA, sometimes three or four times the prices, and more limited brands are available.

Special brands are only available at pharmacies, count around 2000 to 3500 cfp a bottle (appr. 18 to 30 €). FYI anything under spf20 don't work here! You'll burn without knowing it just by walking around

We use only 30 spf and up, so there's no porblem there. I'm just worrying about buying stuff if something goes out. What does "FYI" mean? "for your information"? That's the only thing I can think of.....sorry.

thanks for the replies

Yes, that is what FYI is.

And yes, don't bring anything less than 30spf. Try to bring a little more than you think you'll need so you can avoid having to pay local prices for it. BUT...just in case you do run out, paying their high price is certainly better than going without and getting a sunburn. :-)

Don't be tempted on your first few hours in French Polynesia to go out without sunblock. A bad burn at the beginning can make for a miserable time later in the trip. Like many tropical destination, the direct overhead sun reflecting off the water gives you a double/triple dose of sun versus what you might experience outside the tropics. My guess is that 16 oz to 24 oz of sunblock will last a couple for a week depending on how often they stay in the water and do re-applications throughout the day. Better to have more than not enough. Oops, maybe you're already in FP.

Hi! Just wanted to say, that we had 3 weeks in FP and NO Sunburn!!! The first few days were cloudy (which can be very dangerous) but then the sun came out. It was great. We slathered ourselves with sunblock!!

Bye!!!

Kitra, Congratulations. You passed your first test. You are now allowed to come back anytime you can afford to do so. Expect a case of the FP Flu within a few months
