We love to dive. But we are considering spending almost all our time on Huahine. We don't have to have the worlds greatest diving. My wife likes underwater photography and would almost be content snorkling or shorediving as she could be still and get shots that are hard to get drifting around.

Are there turtles or any other big animals around Huahine to keep it interesting? We like nite dives. Also, little things like sea horses and nudibrachs.

Hardly anybody mentions what is encountered daily diving and snorkling Huahine. Thanks.

I haven't seen a turtle there, but I don't dive, only snorkel. I don't think there are sea horses. I haven't seen any, but maybe somebody else knows.

What I see in my daily snorkeling there are the usual fish-clown, convict, puffer, damsels, lion fish, anemones, reef tip sharks, and those ones that are really long and silver and thin.Millions of little silver fish that go by in clouds. Orange fish that go by in clouds. I have a fish guide, but then never look at it. Sea cucumbers. Urchins.

Rays. There apparently can be whales, but have never been there at that time. Octopus. Wrasses. I think if you look at any of the fish pictures here on Tahiti Explorer ,that's what you see in Huahine.

Where are you going to stay? We are leaving in less than 3 weeks. We've been to Huahine several times. We've stayed there the equivalent of over three months. It's our favorite, but we have not been to the Tuamotu's ,which seems to have better diving according to posts here.

I'm only a snorkeller, not a diver so I can't give you advice on diving there. We snorkelled off the beach just north of Fare (at Rande's Shack) and it was like a mini-drift snorkel. The coral was healthy and we saw lots of fish (nothing like the Tuamotus, but much better, in my experience, than Moorea). holte's already mentioned most of the fish we saw that we knew...but there were many we didn't know. And we also saw those Picasso Triggerfish (they're my favourite and I nicknamed them Nikes because they remind me of running shoes for some reason). We did see whales breeching between Huahine and Raiatea in November 2 years ago (just briefly).

Thanks Holte and Old Wife!!! That's exactly what
i wanted to know. We don't have a plan yet. We're still saving and dreaming. Would probably go either when my work is slow or when a migration is emminent (like whales or hammerheads or something). We also consider Raj Ampat. But I like the way you guys make Huahine sound. I mean out of the water. A kind of sleepy local place. As far as a hotel the Relaise Mahana seems like the ticket from what we've read (that's me and the wife Patiopam). I like the Nike's, too, O.W. I think one of my favorites are the huge parrotfish we'd see around Belize. Also MORAY EELS also hammerheads (obviously).

You'll see moray eels. No problem. Relais Mahana is great. It's all great in Huahine. Leaving on FRIDAY!!!!!

Full disclosure- I'm a snorkeling snob. I thought Belize was "ok", amd the same for most of the carribbean. I want pristine coral and gobs of fish without having to learn to dive. Just like it should be.

If you like diving, the Tuamotu archipelago is where you want to be. The atolls receive far fewer visitors, so the coral is in much better condition. I don't recall very many who thought the snorkeling or diving was fantastic in the Societies after they'd been to the Tuamotu. If you could find a local guide in Huahine, I'm sure the trip would be much better. I'd split your time in 1/2 and go to Fakarava or Rangiroa. It's a shame to go that far and only see the common/OK underwater parts of the country.

The south pass at Fakarava is AWESOME. The BEST snorkelling I've ever done.

I haven't been to Rangi (yet) but in my opinion, Tikehau is the pick for me so far, but Bora Bora at the Muri Muri site is ALWAYS an excellent dive. Taha'a used to be good, but apparently the Crown of Thorns have destroyed the coral there, so it will be a few years before it comes back.

I have seen that there is a program that is working on irradicating the Crown of Thorns along the Great Barrier Reef. Does anyone know if there is anything similar going on in FP to protect the reefs from these reef destoying predators?
