What's the difference between premium and standard beach/OW bungalows at the luxury resorts? The websites don't seem to do a good job of explaining it. Is it just the view and/or size, or are there differences in amenities too?

We'll be stopping in Tahiti for 6 nights on the way from Easter Island to New Zealand, as part of a larger trip. Most of our trip is budget, but I figured if I'm going to splurge anywhere, this is the place to do it. I'm thinking about going to Moorea for 4 nights and staying at one of the four luxury spots. I just can't figure out if going with the premium is worth it.

What would you recommend, premium beach or standard overwater?

Thanks

The premium is usually (in my experience) a better view or location (seldom size or amenities, but that might differ with some of the newer resorts on Bora Bora). Some bungalows are near boat lanes and can be loud (and swimming a bit tricky). Others have views mostly of other bungalows and the views of the mountains or lagoon is obstructed. You can often figure out what's the "problem" if you look at the map. Once you've figured out which resort suits you, come back here & ask about bungalow numbers that are recommended in each category. Many posters here have stayed at various resorts and can advise you about boat traffic, views, etc.

By the way, if you're going to splurge on an overwater bungalow on Moorea, you might want to avoid the Intercontinental because only 4 of theirs (I think it's 4) are true overwater bungalows..the rest have only their frontage over the water. On the other hand, they have some really nice premium beach bungalows (the layout of all of their bungalows is identical, by the way). Personally, I think if you're going to go there only once, you should spend a few nights in an overwater bungalow just to experience it!

We did a panoramic OWB at the Moorea Hilton and loved it. I know it's maybe "touristy" but it was our first trip there and our 20th anniversary--so it seemed like the thing to do. We visited the Pearl, the IC and the Hilton (not the Sofitel though--they seem not very...encouraging of visitors). We had a great view and it was lovely to see and hear the water all the time...

I'm babbling! Good luck planning your trip!

This is as bad, though, Barbi, because now I have to open every forum (hoping to see a new post) & click on your bumps.

Rats, old Wife, I didn't think of that... sorry! I just hate to see those spammers headlines under every topic.

I agree Barbi. You beat me to the punch on a new topic. Yves has been a little slow to remove them lately.

I take the previous remark back. It looks like Yves has been busy removing them as we speak. Sorry Yves.
