I wasn't sure because even though we spent weeks packing, I thought I might have forgotten my beach towels at home.

They are not at home, so someone took them out of our suitcase.

On another trip, someone took a damask tablecloth I was bringing to a friend in FP.

What is the procedure for reporting missing items? It's not that they are so valuable, but they were really nice ones that were thick and really protected me from the rain if it rained on us when we were boating.

That's what I hate about not being able to lock your luggage anymore!

It terrifies me if they ever completely restrict us from bringing carry ons. Can you imagine if we had to check our valuable stuff like cameras, etc?

I have no idea what the procedure is Holte. But...maybe in the future, you should try making an exact list of EVERYTHING in your luggage. Keep one copy with you and then tape a copy of it to the top inside portion of your suitcase, so whoever opens it will see a detailed print out and know that you know EXACTLY what should be in there....and check it upon arrival at your destination.

Holte, next time get a set of the TSA approved locks. We've been using them for years. Never lost anything. And TSA HAS opened them for inspection. They leave a note inside saying they were there.

I agree with the locks. I've never carried anything I'd miss (other than snorkelling equipment on the way there), but the TSA locks are supposed to be the answer. The inspectors can open them but nobody else can (and the inspectors are trustable, as far as I'm concerned).

The TSA locks are just a visual deterrent in the hopes that whomever wants to steal will move on to easier pickings. I have always used locks and have many things stolen through the years even by TSA agents or baggage handlers with access to TSA locks. It would be naive to think that thieves would not be able to get a key to open TSA locks if they were so inclined. If someone wants to steal, there is no foolproof way to prevent it but I do agree with adding a TSA lock and making it at least a little more difficult.

Holte, sorry to hear this happened to you. First, report it immediately to the airline; see what they send you as far as claim forms, etc. It helps if you have receipts for the cost of the towels.

This has happened to me several times on trips to FP, and I have learned to pack anything "valuable" in the bottom of the checked luggage, making it less attainable. What generally happens is that the airline refers you to TSA to make a claim and TSA says it's the airline's responsibility.

The new TSA "unlocked" procedures (or "locked" with a TSA-lock) make this kind of theft easier. I agree that the TSA-approved locks are ONLY a mild deterrent, not a true preventitive, and I don't bother with them. If anything, "locked" luggage points to a thief where the GOOD stuff is! And, no, sadly, I don't share your trust of the TSA inspectors...

I hope you get reimbursed!

Patti, it may be coming to that soon! Recently, after the Christmas Day bombing attempt, Air Canada went to ZERO carryon on flights coming into the USA, allowing only certain excluded items onboard. Although they did allow laptops, they did not allow laptop cases or chargers, iPods, or other electronics. One guy reported he could take his camera, but only by wearing it around his neck, and no extra lenses and equipment. (Since then, these restrictions have been eased a tiny bit, and they are being inconsistent about it,; still no rollerboards allowed.)

BLEAH!

Barb~ I know. I don't think that day is too far away. My daughter flew to London the day after the shoebomber incident. She wasn't allowed to take ANYTHING on with her. Not even a purse! Only her ID. They had lightened up restrictions at least a little bit on her way back. She could bring on a book and I think her purse.

With all the expensive electronic gadgets people carry on trips with them these days, airlines are going to HATE the day they restrict all carry ons. Can you imagine how many claims there will be for lost and stolen luggage and items? Especially now that you don't even have to have a claim check to retrieve your luggage. Forget the thieves in TSA or baggage....literally anyone can take any bag they want at baggage claim and walk off with it probably loaded with all sorts of goodies. The claims against the airlines will skyrocket!!! OR...they'll have to go back to having people stationed there to compare your luggage tags like in the old days....can you say INCREASED costs.
