First voyage left today!!! To be seen how they'll deal with all the red tape, immatriculation of the ship (France or FP or Wallis Futuna) and since some people named "Tamatoa" have also started to claim sums like 500,000 us$ for usuage of the name Tamatoa... never a dull moment in paradise hihihihi

Yay! An alternative to AT. Pity about the grab for cash suing rights for the name. Competition is always good for us travellers. Maybe a Tahiti Drink fountain next to the Hinano fountain? At least it won't go flat if it keeps flowing.

Ship owners have decided to boycot as they've requested fiscal benefits from government without any luck so far. Until end of June no more voyages and if they don't get what they want the ship will leave the territory grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :(

This news from Tahiti Presse today.... sad...

Fast ferry operator threatens to pull out

June 8 2010 at 11:32am | source: Tahitipresse | No Comments

The company operating the fast ferry King Tamatoa which makes trips from Tahiti to the Leeward Islands wants tax exemption to be approved by the French Polynesian government by June 30.

If this is not done, the King Tamatoa will not stay in French Polynesia anymore and 44 persons will be laid off, the company announced.

Tax exemptions have been requested since September 2009 and nothing has been done since, the company added.

The company has also decided to suspend regular trips to and from the Leeward Islands (Huahine, Raiatea and Bora Bora) starting June 7.

The King Tamatoa fast ferry has in fact started regular trips from Papeete to the Leeward Islands in April. The King Tamatoa was first scheduled to start regular trips March 5.

But the first start was postponed as shipowner Bill Ravel was already seeking tax advantages.

The Tong Sang government approved a decree on Feb. 24 allowing the King Tamatoa to begin Leeward Islands rotations.

The government decree also accepted Ravel's request for a yearly diesel fuel and oil quota for the 983-passenger vessel, which can also carry 250 motor vehicles.

However, Tong Sang clearly stated at that time that the government would not grant additional advantages to the ship.

This would be unfair for other shipowners in French Polynesia, Tong Sang had claimed.

He has a strong political base in the Leeward Islands, where there is big public support for the fast ferry and its competing role with Air Tahiti, the regularly scheduled inter-island airline.

The King Tamatoa, which was built in 2000 in a French shipyard, arrived in Tahiti on Feb. 21 from France.

The vessel is 134-meters (440-feet) long by 19.8 meters (65 feet) wide and has a top speed of 42 knots provided by its two diesel engines.

Indeed, too bad really, lots of people already booked for the Hawaiki Nui Va'a too...

The very abrupt way of ending it's service is not very elegant way of treating passengers either as many families got stuck with car at either end and now have to put their vehicles on the inter island ships against much higher costs and fly themselves back to where they came from with AT at double the price.

A positive note is that the ship apparantly used somewhere up to 70,000 liters of fuel for each return trip (one of the reasons it was sold by its prior owner) at least it will no longer pollute the FP waters... :)

Wow! I guess that there is an upside because of all of the use of the fuel.

What a mess for the people who used the service and were stuck with all of those costs.
