Where to stay in Bora Bora

I'm starting to think about our next trip to FP, and since I haven't been to Bora Bora yet, I thought we would try to spend 3 or 4 days there this next visit. I had been trying to wait until Hotel Bora Bora re-opens, but now it looks like that may be a long time from now.
I'm having trouble figuring out where to stay. I'm looking for nice accomodations (including decent restaurant on-site), great snorkeling at the resort, and the ability to go to the main island for lunch or dinner, etc.
I'm drawn to St. Regis and Thalasso based on the reviews and pictures, but I love to snorkel, and these places don't seem to have much if any snorkeling. Plus, from what I read, its not very easy to get to the main island for dinner, etc. My next thought was the Sofitel (on the motu), but the lack of restaurant might be problematic. Am I just over-thinking this? I'm sure it will be great no matter where I pick, but I'm just confusing myself trying to pick a place after looking at all the pros and cons listed on this website of each of these resorts. Can anyone who has been to these resorts comment on my concerns? Thanks in advance!

The lack of a restaurant at the Sofitel Motu isn't a problem because it's a quick hop to the main island where there are lots of nearby restaurants (including the one at the Sofitel Bora Bora Marara). The shuttle is on-demand so you don't have to time your coming and going to any schedule (and you can feed the fish with provided bread if you have to wait a couple of minutes for it to arrive). The snorkelling at the Sofitel Motu is excellent!

We love the old Marara. Stayed there 3 times. The snorkeling in the coral garden behind the Motu is really good. You can't go wrong either place.

The Thalasso shuttle is excellent, as it transfers you to the IC at Matira. Shuttles from 4 Seasons, St Regis and Le Meridien are a bit of a struggle (and they charge to to get to Viatape) but the food at Le Meridien is REALLY good. The Pearl shuttle/bus program is really good as well, but then again, the food there is awesome. You'll find that most restaurants will pick you up and drop you off at the hotel's berth anyway, so you can't really go wrong. The St Regis berth at Anau is really nice with an air conditioned room with cold bottled drinking water and nice lounge chairs to sit while you wait.

When did the Motu shut down their restaurant? I assume it still serves a buffet breakfast -- or does it?

Your right to think twice about the Meridien/Thalasso side of the lagoon if you really want on-site snorkeling. There isn't much over there. That side has never had much to begin with (not enough fresh water nutrient exchange with the ocean) and I'm sure the construction has taken a toll on what was left. And yes, dinner is a serious pain. Unless you rent a car for the stay, you'll have to arrange for a pick up kills the spontaneous urge. The SM is the cost effective choice or the Nui if $$$ is no object.

Candice -
There are TONS of nice hotels in Bora Bora - honestly, so many it's hard to choose. Start by browsing the hotels section for Bora Bora on this website, and then you can read reviews online as well on websites like trip advisor. All the resorts are different, and they offer different amenities depending on what you want your trip to be like. If you liked the Le Meridien for the view and the area that it's in, then probably one of the other resorts out on the eastern motus would serve you well - Intercontinental Thalasso, St. Regis, or Four Seasons. Let us know what's important to you - level of luxury, snorkeling, view, size/decor of bungalow, ease of going out to places other than the resort for dinner, etc. Then maybe we can try a recommendation.
And just a side note, I recommend Moorea before Bora Bora, based upon my own experience and many other's recommendations. "Save the luxury for last" is the way I've heard it!
