P.S. You might want to check out some of the trip reports posted here too, to get an idea of which islands and which hotels might appeal to you.

As a resident of the island of Hawai'i, I get the whole French Polynesia/Tahiti thing. What I'm not getting is why the island of Tahiti is not desirable to visit? I got the feel that it is French Polynesia's 'Oahu ('Oahu has 75% of the State's population) but is there anything worth visiting/experiencing around or away from Papeete, or on Tahiti Iti? I know we pay dearly to get to this remote island chain and we want to spend our money wisely, but the Island of Tahiti can't really be that bad, can it? I am very curious as I almost have enough miles to go back to French Polynesia and am thinking about Tahiti/Moorea this time. Last time was Moorea/Bora Bora. You guys were right, I'm hooked, darn it.

There are quite a few posts here about people who spent a few days on Tahiti and had a great time. I think most rented cars and drove all over Tahiti Nui and Tahiti Iti and saw waterfalls, etc. I'm sure it's not bad, it's just most of us want to get away from the crowds and there are so many fantastic islands to explore. I'm sure a Tahiti/Moorea combo is a great idea, especially if you've been to FP already and want to focus on those (and it would sure be cheaper since you don't need inter-island airfare).

Hi, I have stayed down in Teahupoo a couple of times, my son is a surfer. We arranged rides there as the Hawaiian flight getting in Sat night (wish they would leave it Friday like it is right now) you cannot take the bus on Sunday.
Tahiti Iti is a whole different world from Papeete. Just like the Northshore of Oahu vs. Honolulu. Much less touristy than other areas in FP. Taking the bus to and from Teahupoo is a great experience, very little English is spoken, the people are very friendly and helpful. You feel like you've stepped into a different world - you have.
On our first trip with my young teen sons we were amazed at seeing people with boxes of food, TVs, etc on the bus then getting into a boat to go home. Gave us a new perspective on a "trip to town"
Very few people, besides those on this forum understand why I go to FP for my vacations from Hawaii. The Polynesian flu has no cure. Joan(Kauai)

Thanks, Joan. I appreciate your reply. I like stepping into different worlds, which is why I travel. Where did you stay in Teahupoo? Is it worth staying in Papeete for a couple days, then going there, then going to Moorea for a few days? Because Hawaiian leaves once a week, I can only go for a week this time. From what I'm reading, it sounds like rain, Hilo-style, in Teahupoo. Mahalo.

We certainly had some major rains, I live on the North shore of Kauai so what we consider sprinkles, others think of as a down pour. Also had beautiful days. We stayed at Vanira lodge, very nice, but very steep driveway, we didn't have a car. Also stayed at Pension Bonjouir many years ago, its very isolated and rustic, good if your a surfer. I would get out of Papeete as quick as I can, if you get in on a Sat night, nothing is open on Sunday.
Right now Hawaiian leaves on Fridays so you could enjoy Papeete Sat then head onward.
I usually go to Moorea as quick as I can, then Papeete mid trip as I head to another spot. I like to see a new island each visit, but sometimes go for the familiar - Moorea/ Huahine.
When are you going?

There's also a place called Black water lodge in Teahupoo popular with surfers... Tahiti and Tahiti iti are really beautiful in the back area, not Papeete and the "suburbs" like just East and West of the Capital. Beyond it is really worth visiting. There is also a place up in the real inner part of Tahiti, le Relais de la Maroto, it's a small "hotel" in the middle of the mountains
