We had been informed by our local TA that Kia Ora was scheduled to close mid Jan 2010 for a year.

Check this link as well because Yves has posted a specific reply about the renovations being undertaken.

Apparantly both Kia Ora's will be closed for reno for 2 years!

The Rangiroa Novotel has been taken over by the Pacific Beachcomber group (Intercontinentals Tahiti Moorea, BB and BB Thalasso, Maitai BB, M/S Paul Gauguin and future Le Brando at Tetiaroa) and will be known as the Maitai Lagoon Rangiroa, after some work (including adding a pool) the hotel will be a 3 *** iso 2 **

Who did you speak with, Poehere (if it's ok to ask)? I had heard just about a year (with possible delays) -- not two whole years. But I'd rather plan on the worst-case scenario for a trip, rather than have something booked and be looking forward to it, and then get bumped.

This is from their website:

Ia Orana,

We would like to thank you very much for your support this past year.

Hotel Kia Ora is closed for renovation for 2010
The project will take at least a year to complete so we do not have a reopening date at this time.
As soon as the schedule has been established, we will give you the information.

Thanks Poehere.

Denver Joe, please don't think I'm an idiot about the website -- every time I went to their website, it was down and looked non-operational (no messages of any kind). I'm glad when you visited that it had some information. We may give Rangi a miss this trip, especially now that Raimti has scuba diving.

YG2, no problem. I had problems with it also. It was hit and miss until that message finally came up.

Apparantly the renovations at Kia Ora have not started at all yet and will not happen until at least next July or maybe even later.... :(
