Is it possible to buy tradittional dance costume at the Tiki Village or somewhere else on Moorea ?
Would be the ultimate souvenir...
I see att this website in Hawaii they have people that can make one for you for a certain price... But not exactly real is it...

You can buy coconut bras but most of the costumes are made from printed fabrics that they buy locally and sew their own

Also, most of the true traditional dance costumes (like those used to perform during Heiva) are made the day of the dance performance from living leaves, vines, and flowers. It would be difficult to keep them for sale and later use. But a coconut bra along with a colorful pareo (and the little book they sell showing how to tie it in various ways) would make a pretty cute dance costume to take home!

Thanx for your input.
So what are your thoughts on the costumes on the webpage I provided ?

Seems like it's made of tapa, shells, feathers etc.
Would it pass at a Heiva event ?

Already have one from the Cook Islands. Hangs prominently on one of my living room walls :-)

I think those two artists sound like they know how to make authentic dance costumes, but they will probably be very pricey.
I have an American friend living on Tahiti (a permanent resident now for many years) who is a professional seamstress, and has made many Heiva and festival costumes for the local participants, some award-winning in the competitions! Morty, if you email at BarbiJKM@aol.com, I can share her email address, and you can contact her before you leave, maybe meet her while you are there, and have a custom-made dance costume sewn while you are there! I even have some photos of her dance creations...

I would LOVE a Tahitian (ladies) dance costume - assuming I could chose one from the many designs - but what would I do with it???? 'Grass' skirts may well be better on video than hanging in a hallway or as an obscure remnant of a holiday experience in your living room...
