Gary and Cath~ I am horrible at judging things like that. But I guess maybe around 3-4 foot swells??? I don't know...I could certainly feel going up and REALLY feel going back down....like on a roller coaster. My stomach went up in the air on numerous swells. And I made the biggest mistake when I bent over to get something out of my back pack...OMG...That's when I really almost lost my lunch. It wasn't too bad as long as I was watching the horizon...but the minute I bent over....OMG!!!!

Hey Patti, I'm guessing after looking at some of the You Tube footage of the waves crashing over the boulevarde boardwalk in downtown Papeete that the waves might have been double that - yikes!!

We had between 4 and 7 meter swells for 3 days ... (Austral islands 9 meters!)
Patti I guess my silky voice during the ferry crossing didn't smooth out your stomach huh? LOL

Hmmm....Poehere...I guess maybe those swells were a bit more than a few feet then. I really have no idea. All I can tell you I REALLY felt them and I've never felt much of anything before on the ferry. It literally felt like I was on a roller coaster a few times.

Poehere your "silky voice" was MUCH smoother than the ferry crossing! LOL!

Wow. Things that hadn't changed in years are now changing very quickly. Tehai is too young to retire. His smile made me smile. And so did Brunos. At one of the Motu picnics a girl, before entering the water at the shark feed asked him if she should be afraid of the black tips, and he replied, "Don't worry, sharks don't like white meat."

Club Bali Hai has the most beautiful view on the island, wait, let me rephrase that. The most beautiful view on the island. Hopefully Matahai and the economy can keep things afloat.

Did you visit Muk at the round table when you were there? That's probably our favorite thing to do on the island. Get drunk with Muk. Usually on Wednesday he took the night off, but with no dance show did he come by? Hopefully he and Jay are doing alright.

He must have skipped a few nights when the storm came through.

Thanks again for all the updates.

I know. It is changing so quickly it's hard to absorb it all. In the last 3 years Rose, Nelly, Valestine, Rosalie, Tehai all retired....and now that Hiro's Tours left....no more Bruno either. Tehai was the main groundskeeper/repairman guy, right? I think I have the right guy in mind. Always wore a shirt that looked like a hospital scrubs? If so, then yes he is the one who retired.

Basically I think you can retire there after you have worked 35 years. So if you started at say 14 or 15 or so, you can retire at 49 or 50.

And Bruno used that EXACT same line on me on my first time with the sharks! I loved it!

I agree, out of all the hotels, CBH easily has the best view. It may not be the best hotel...but none of the others come close to the view....with the possible exception of Kaveka...their view would be somewhat similar.

Yes, we did visit with Muk most nights. He was there every night, even on Wednesdays now. Believe it or not Muk actually came by the night of the storm...and was really surprised no one was there to chat. I just happended to be in the lobby at the time talking to Coco (the night security guy) and so I visited with Muk for about 5 minutes and then he left to go to Rudys and have his drinks there instead. He seems to be about the same as last time. Still loves his Cuervo Gold.

I didn't get to see Jay at all, as he was back in the States during my stay.

Love the "glass half full - not half empty" report, Patti. If you like geckos, then go to Niue - there's more geckos than humans! You'll get mountains of "wings" the size of Otemanu every morning. So February is the half empty time to go now?

You know what, I'd probably still go in Feb. But I think in the future I will be a little more cautious in telling first time travelers that the weather in Feb is no problem.

We've never been in February. All our trips have been (in order) Nov, Dec/Jan, July, Nov, Nov. Next one will be November again, hence my comment about the half empty time to go.
