thank you so much Patti! we are vodka drinkers so we can bring 2 liters per person in our checked baggage correct? What if we bought it at the airport duty free...do they just hold it for us on the plane? I'm just worried about going over the weight limit on our checked baggage.

I looked up the actual alcohol import limit, and although most people think it's 2 liters per person, this is what it actually says:

Alcohol:
1 liter of spirits over 22 % vol. or
2 liters of fortified wine or sparkling wine
2 liters of still wine

http://french-polynesia.visahq.com/customs/

Technically, that would be one liter of vodka apiece. As a practical matter, though, if you packed a liter each in your checked luggage and then bought a liter each at duty free in LAX, I doubt there would be a problem. The only time I've seen people stopped and questioned leaving immigration/customs is when they have huge overloaded duty-free bags. They very seldom ever check tourists' luggage.

When you buy your items at LAX duty-free (outside security), they take the information off your boarding pass and then deliver your bags (with foam-wrapped bottles in shopping bags) at your departure gate (inside security). So you don't need to go through Xray with your purchases, and it doesn't count in your luggage weight.

Unless there's a cyclone or tropical storm going through (and they aren't forecast), the weather always looks like it's going to be bad online & seldom is. You'll likely get some rain, but it seldom rains for a full day. And paradise in the rain is still paradise. It's warm and the swimming and snorkelling are still fun. Even walking in the rain is refreshing.

Especially on Fakarava. We sat on the ocean side one afternoon & saw the most amazing double rainbow that filled the entire sky (and you know how big the sky is there). Unforgettable.

oh good...yeah everyday said thunderstorms so I was a little worried but warm rain is always fun since we don't see that much in San Diego. So the rain and clouds don't ruin the clarity of the water that much? I'm sure the rainbows and sunsets are going to be amazing. We are borrowing our friends SLR camera and we have a couple underwater point and shoot cameras. We are big picture takers :)

The only time the water clarity is hurt is if it rains very hard for an extended period....then there is some runoff from the island clouding up the water. But otherwise it is usually not much of an issue.

You have to look at the silver linings in things...some rain showers may mean double rainbows and some clouds may mean great sunsets! :-)

You will be in picture taking heaven.
