we are leaving out of LAX and were wondering if we are allowed to bring alcohol on our checked baggage...does anyone know about that? We are staying one night in Papette and then heading over to Moorea...do they let you go grocery shopping over there and bring food and alcohol on the small planes from island to island?

Yes, you can pack alcohol in your packed luggage. You can also buy it at LAX Duty Free...then you won't have it in your checked bags.

They have grocery stores on Moorea. No need to do shopping in Papeete, you can wait until you get to Moorea.

Yes, you can carry on alcohol on the Air Moorea flights. You don't go through a regular security screening on those flights.

Unless you drink wine, beer, or rum, you'll probably want to bring alcohol with you or buy it at Duty Free at LAX...as hard alcohol is very expensive in FP. They do have many French wines and local Tahitian Rhum at pretty good prices though. And the local beer, Hinano is pretty good. And...they have a local drink called Tahiti Drink...sort of like a Maitai. Very good...it comes in quart size containers in most markets.

thanks Patti. Yeah I think we will bring as much as we can with us from home...we are Vodka drinkers. So you don't know if there is a maximum amount you can stow away in your checked baggage?
Those Maitai's you're talking about sound really good too. Thanks for the quick response.

I think you are allowed 2 liters per person.

Hi Becktroy, and welcome to the forum. Try the Tahiti drink with a nip of white Tahiti Rum, a nip of dark Tahiti Rum and a nip of Cointreau. Now that's one hell of a Maitai! It tastes even better sitting on the balcony of your room in FP.

Also, check out this website for info on customs etc

Is there anything better than a sipping a Tahitian Mai Tai on an Overwater Bungalow in FP?

You are better off doing your grocery shopping on Moorea, because Air Moorea may charge you excess luggage fees to take all your groceries over on the small plane. You are allowed 44 pounds each on Air Moorea (total weight of your combined luggage each).

For bringing liquor home, you have to check your own country's rules about this.
