Boy, just when I thought I had things figured out for accomodation on Bora Bora it's now a wee bit dodgy. I signed up for a premium OWB @PB in May and since doing so, have heard ubiquitous commentary about rampant mosquitoes on the warpath, poor service, questionable add-ons to the bill, dirty rooms, bland food, iffy boat dropoffs etc etc. (!) Some people say they had a great time....especially if they were in the famous OWB #35. (by the way, does anyone know how deep the OWB's are at PB? From the picture it looks like only 1 OWB is near deeper water and I'm not sure just how shallow the rest of the area is) Le Meridien, by contrast appears to be devoid of bug problems, better service and food and no bill problems etc etc. The water here for the OWB's also looks deeper. The place has more of an amenities look to it also (?) I think the only negative comment I can recall is that the boat dock or boats going by was a noise issue or something.
What do you guys think? I seem to see the dagger in the PB for a lot more things than other hotels in this forum, and Le Meridien doesn't have many negative comments. If I changed to Le Meridien how does the price compare for both Premium OWB's. ?
Cheers.

Water off our PB OWB was waist/chest/neck deep, but I would just swim out a little ways for the deeper water. We were in No. 28 and really liked it.

We just got back from le Meridien. We stayed in #242, out at the end, the room was ok, view was great, water was about 10' deep, but there were lots of fly's. The only food we ate there was the continental breakfast, it sucked. We were only there for 3 nights, and went over to Bora Bora each night for dinner, only problem with that is you may have to wait up to 45 minutes for the shuttle boat to take you back.
There's really not any snorkeling at Le Meridien either, other than the turtle sanctuary, which was very cool. Either you go out with a group, or do like we did and rent a boat and go down by the Sofitel. I also felt the resort was very touristy!
Prior to our stay at Le Meridien, we were at the Pearl Beach in Taha'a, which was perfect in every way. So maybe that jaded my opinion a bit, but I definitely would not stay at the le Meridien again. Next time in Bora Bora we'll probably stay at the Sofitel Motu.
All this is just my opinion, and I'm sure you'll find many people that love the place, it just wasn't for us!

We stayed in a non-premium OWB (#216) and the water was about 8 feet deep. Like surfcontrol said, snorkeling off the OWB is non-existant, but swimming was fine. We didn't see a bug, but perhaps it was the time of year - September - that we were there. We did have a poor gecko drown in our ice bucket.
Thought the staff service was very good. I also didn't like the b-fast buffet, but mainly because I didn't think $35 was worth it for rolls, toast, etc. We only ate there once. We really liked the Te Ava restaurant by the pool. We went out twice (Bloody Mary's and Fare Manuia) and didn't have the long wait for the boat that surfcontrol did.
I didn't feel that this resort was touristy. Disneyland is touristy, this was not. Perhaps it is not as secluded as other resorts on other islands, but touristy is not the work I would use to describe it. We would certainly go back to this resort again.

I guess it was the guys walking around with shorts, shoes and black socks, and the women with their unbrellas. BTW, it wasn't raining!

Yikes! That sounds like a beach in Florida near a retirement community.
I didn't see any fashion problems like that when I was there. Pareus and bikinis on the gals, swimming trunks or speedos on the guys - no socks!

Exactly my point~ When in paradise I want to see topless and thongs, not umbrellas...
