we are planning on mostly snorkeling BUT if we have a chance on bora bora, moorea and huahine what dive operations are recommended? we will be at hotel hibiscus on moorea and noticed Fun Dive was close by-anyone use them? what about bora bora? We'll be at Temanuata village. I am interested in doing the manta dive as an introductory dive as i am not certified-what are my chances of seeing them on a morning dive? My husband is certified and might be bringing his own equipment. Does huahine have any good diving for him? We aren't going to rangiroa as originally planned and my husband had rotator cuff surgery in january but i have a feeling that doing just a couple dives while there will be just too tempting!! :)

Are you staying at Temanuata mountainside or the one on Pointe Matira? There is a good dive shop nearby (next to the Hotel Bora Bora) called BB Diving... don't know if they'll do an introductory for the manta's but they often go to Anau on the East side of BB to spot them.
there's a Bathys dive centre at the IC hotel not to far from Hibiscus (not walking distance though)

check out also: www.polynesia-diving.com

sorry but what is rotator cuff surgery?

Poehere, rotator cuff is the shoulder joint. he had his arm in a sling for about a month and has started physical therapy now. he should be fine for kayaking etc... by then but probably shouldn't overexert it too much. he is a triathlete so is in decent shape.
I am really hoping to see a manta ray. where would be my best chance on an introductory dive to see them?

Hi shelbydc. Like Poehere said, Anau has the Mantas back there now and the dive is fairly shallow (inside the lagoon). You will almost certainly see them there. I dived with Giles from Blue Nui (based at Pearl) and he will pick you up from the closest dock near where you are staying. He is a VERY good instructor and a lovely guy to boot. His contact details are:

Gary/Cath,Thanks for letting me know the mantas are still there :)
The Blue Nui dive center sounds good-I'll keep them in mind! I am not the diver,my husband is, but I really want to at least do an introductory dive to see the fabulous mantas!! I will probably mostly snorkel otherwise. My husband will dive on the 3 islands we are visiting (moorea, bora bora, huahine)

If you want to do an intro dive, then Giles is the man. I ran out of air for the first time EVER on my first dive at Tikehau (faulty gauge - should have used theirs or at least got mine serviced pre trip) and he was there. I totally recommend him. He is VERY proffessional.

Re Huahine. We are not divers, so I cannot be that specific for you. But, my understanding it that Annie provides a great diving service. Her boat was moored right across from the Chez Guynette in Fare. But because of the construction, she moved her boat to the marina which is at the other end of town-maybe three blocks away. However, if the construction is done, she may have moved her boat back. We haven't been there since January 3.

You can ask at Joe's shop. It is right next door to the restaurant New Snack Temarra (sp?) which is an excellent reasonable place to eat. I like the grilled tuna which comes with different sauces. Vanilla is my favorite. You get a potato choice or rice and vegetables as well for about $20.00. It's more than I can eat. Of course, you always get bread and butter. Absolutely delicious.

Thanks Holte! I know that you are a Huahine lover :)
I am sooo excited to be going there and staying at Au Motu Mahare. I plan to just snorkel, kayak, bike and dive. Everyone seems to say that 3 nites is enough for each island but it probably won't be for me! I think I may have FP flu symptoms already even though I haven't even been there yet! :)

I don't know who thinks 3 nights is enough per island! I sure don't. The least time we've ever spent is 5 (other than Tahiti on a stop-over on the way to another island).

oh oh shelby. Three nights is not enough. We stayed on Huahine once for 23 days and it was not enough.

It's OK. You will become an addict and then you will be back. You will scheme and dream like the rest of us poor souls.

We took a boat past the place where you are staying on Huahine this time. The water is so shallow, but they must be experts in how to operat that boat. We saw the rays there again. It is very beautiful. The Coral Gardens are right there by the Old Sofitel. There is often a strong current there, but a million fish.

When are you going? If it isn't too soon, I have a tee shirt that I am going to have made for someone if you could bring it to her on Huahine?
