Holte, We will be going to FP on March 25 thru April 3. Not too much longer:)
I am already prepared to fall in love with Huahine! I am really after the authentic experience and do not require the fancy resort life at all so I think going "budget" will actually give me MORE of that (and my pocketbook will thank me too)!
I live in the Santa Barbara California area and would be happy to deliver a package for you if you want. Let me know and I will give you my address etc... :)

I have to hurry and get that tee shirt made! I'll see if I can. Thanks so much.

The tee shirt is for a woman who owns a little restaurant right outside of Fare, almost next to the Mayor's office. She always gives us Tahitian lessons.

Shelby,
I am a little confused. If your husband feels diving Rangiroa would be unsafe, given the state of healing of his shoulder, then diving the Society islands may not be such a hot plan, either. Conversely, if he is ok to dive in the Societies, he may be able to dive Rangiroa this trip, given some restrictions. Which would be great!

Whatever he decides, I would make sure he is evaluated by a doctor and gets a _written_ clearance to dive, so you can show the dive shops. This is because you must fill out a medical statement and liability waiver at each dive shop -- for safety reasons he'll need to disclose the surgery. They'll also wonder why he's not carrying his own tank (at some shops)! It's not something that is fair or safe to not mention, and if you mention it, they'll want proof that a doctor ok'd you to dive. So bring a bunch of copies, and maybe email the folks in advance of your trip to make sure there is no last-minute disappointment. It's always safer for a dive operator to say "no" than to risk getting sued.

It is true that diving the pass in Rangiroa can be physical at times -- I would contact the dive shops and find out 1) a description of what is required and 2) whether or not they think a work-around can be arranged. For instance: will he have to cling to rocks as the currents drag on his body? (Hopefully not!) Maybe your husband goes to Rangi, but doesn't dive the pass. Or maybe you choose an operation that uses a regular dive boat, not a Zodiac, which would make the water exit and travel a lot easier on him (which would just leave the issue of using his arm during the dive).

If your itinerary is still flexible, I'd ask around. But I'd also always err on the side of safety.

Yosemitegirl,
My husbands shoulder should be ok for diving by then but he knows that he is not going to do any decompression dives. I will make sure he has some sort of clearance from his doctor just in case we need one. He will be ok lifting his tank etc... Right now he is planning on nothing more difficult than intermediate dives :)

No extreme dives where you are going, Shelby, but he made need to take into consideration that alot of the dive operations have gone back to steel tanks. Heavier to lift, but less weight on the belt needed. I found that with steel tanks, I wear the weight in lb's that I use with kg's when using an aluminium tank. ie. 10kg for aluminium - 10lbs for steel.

Gary and Kath, That's a good conversion tip- and thanks for the heads-up about the steel tanks!
