FP is under a red alert tsunami warning. http://in.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idINIndia-46531320100227

We leave tomorrow -- hope our bungalow is there when we arrive!

Poehere, please post updates when you can!

I am always most worried about the atolls when there are tsunami warnings. Being just a few feet above sea level, there's really no place to evacuate to.

Hopefully it will turn out the same as last one a few months ago...much ado about nothing.

This was an 8.8 earthquake in Chile -- largest since 1900, according to CNN. I am listening to coverage on ccn.com now. There is good coverage from Hawaii news; they are calling the tsunami "a sizable event".

I hope everyone stays safe!

Reuters reports: "Meanwhile, the Pacific island territory of French Polynesia was placed on tsunami alert on Saturday after Chile was rocked by a powerful earthquake that killed at least 78 people.

The first wave was expected to hit the French Polynesian Gambier islands at 1550 GMT, then Tahiti at 1750 GMT and Bora Bora at 1815 GMT, the French Polynesia High Commissioner said in a statement.

"Danger will persist for at least two hours after the first wave hits and magnitudes could be rising," the statement said.

Residents were asked to move away from the shores and seek high ground, it added."

Another report says people are being evacuated to at least 10 meters above sea level. (This is not easy on the atolls!)

27/02/2010Tsunami hits French Polynesia after Chile quake
A weak tsunami struck the Gambier islands in French Polynesia Saturday but there was no major damage, as traffic had been suspended in the region in a tsunami alert following the quake in Chile.

http://www.expatica.com/fr/news/french-rss-news/tsunami-hits-french-polynesia-after-chile-quake_26811.html
Huge waves struck the Gambier archipelago at 6:30 am (1630 GMT), the high commissioner's office in Papeete said, in the first tsunami to strike as it raced across the Pacific.

Sirens wailed in French Polynesia and PA systems woke up residents Saturday to alert them about the impending waves.

The high commissioner's office in Papeete put the islands on alert at 2:00 am (1200 GMT), saying the first waves were expected to reach the Gambier archipelago.

A flight run by Air Tahiti Nui, due to arrive in Tahiti on Saturday, was diverted to Hawaii.

In Tahiti which was expected to be hit at 7:50 (1750 GMT) all traffic was banned within 500 metres (yards) of the coast.

The tsunami could be as high as two metres (more than six feet) in the Marquise islands and on Rurutu in the Australes, the authorities said, while warning people in the latter places to climb to at least 10 metres (33 feet) above sea level.

The high commissioner's office warned that a tsunami comes in several waves of which the first may not be the highest.

A huge arc of Pacific nations from New Zealand to Japan went on tsunami alert following the 8.8 magnitude Chilean earthquake, readying emergency plans instituted after the Indian Ocean disaster of 2004.

We heard the tsunami sirens go off at around 6:00 am this morning, but I sort of dozed through it because we hear those sirens every Wednesday at noon in downtown as a part of the weekly testing.

I just finished filling up all three bathtubs and laundry basin with water. We are 1/2 mile from the beach that directly faces South America but up about 25 feet over the sea level so we are supposed to be out of the tsunami devestation zone. Lets hope that the Hawaiian Islands get out of this unharmed.

I heard that FP got hit by 6 foot waves but no reported damage as of 8:00 am HST. May everyone be safe around the Pacific Rim.

6-foot waves in PPT, but "no damage immediately reported" (which does NOT mean that no damage occurred...).

Coucou! Population was woken up by sirens and those living near water front or bay areas have been evacuated since around 3 am local time with all traffic forbidden since 5 am (still waiting to get a fresh baquette lol)

SO far all is fine, the red alert is still active and has only been lifted for the Gambier islands which had a couple of small waves, so no traffic at all allowed and airport is closed, no planes leaving or coming in...

Barbara ATN just announced also they are not yet back in their normal schedule (only Air France was authorised to land at 4h30 but has not left either)

No news of damage except for Marquesas (just some flooding) which are very vulnerable

That's all for now and our thoughts go especially to the people of Chile, wow that was some quake !

So far a couple of small vessels have sunk in the Marqueses, no other damage reported yet
Highest waves 15 feet at Hiva Oa and Tahuata (Marqueses)

Stay safe too RodJune!
