Hey again guys!
Wow, I sure have a ton of questions :D Just excited that's all!
Anyway, I was wondering what the best option is for "emergency" cell calls. I have an unlocked cell that I was thinking about bringing along in case we're in a tight spot or need to make emergency calls (whether home or to the airline for anything, etc). I was wondering what the best route is to go regarding buying a pay as you go SIM card before I go (i.e. www.gosim.com) or just getting a SIM card while there if I need to? The problem is I don't want to pay $50+ for a SIM card that I'd never use again (assuming I get it there...VINI?). Gosim.com seems nice except they charge you an arm and a leg per minute if you decide to make a call :)
What would you all suggest (besides not bringing a cellphone...:D)

Or you can buy a prepaid phone card here for about $12 and use it to call home from any pay phone or hotel phone. It gives you a local number to call and a password to access your credits. The one I have is charging about 30 cents a minute for calls to the USA. I use a Vini SIM for my local calls here -- the advantage to having a Vini SIM on your unlocked phone is that all INCOMING calls are free and you have a local number where folks from home can reach you immediately.

Also, if you are bringing a laptop with wireless, install Skype on it before you leave home. Skype works very well here, and is free from Skype to Skype, and only about 2 cents a minute from laptop to landline calls (plus the cost of internet connection).

Awesome! Thanks for the brilliant ideas! My phone actually has Wifi capabilities and I have Skype Mobile on it so I could do it that way :) Do they have free wireless hot spots around Moorea (Pearl) and at the IC Le Moana and Thalasso?
How much is a Vini SIM?

The WiFi spots are not generally free, but you can buy an access card with a password -- about 900f for 1 hour.
The Vini SIM packet is about 5000 cfp, and comes with a small amount of minute credits, so you will need to also buy a "recharge card" that allows you add calling time to the number.

I would use Skype on your computer or smart phone. Most hotels have free wi-fi or decent plans. Just get your friends to sign up on Skype and you can make unlimited calls from Skype to Skype accounts for Free. Just us your cell phone in case of emergency.

We just discovered on this past trip that our AIM functions just like Skype, and we were able to talk to our son while he was online not only by typing an IM, but by using the Webcam function (without the picture), we could talk just like on the phone.
Again, a "free" call, except for paying for the internet Wifi minutes.

A SIM card is a memory card which can store phone numbers and personal settings. Some say that installing a SIM card in another phone makes that phone work as "your" phone but this is only true if certain criteria are met. Some carriers diable this feature, others allow it only if that phone is registered with that carrier. hope this helps.
