I know that Tahiti is a relatively safe place and that I need to use common sense with regards to leaving valuables laying around etc.. but are there any suggestions for "storing" items (money, creditcard, camera)while we are snorkeling? We plan on riding bikes around the islands and carrying our snorkel gear along and stopping for snorkeling if we see a nice spot. Maybe a waterproof container that you can wear? Any ideas?

Yes, you can buy water-tight containers for your valuables. We bought a waterproof camera case for our digital camera so we could take photos snorkelling. The first one (for our first trip) was a bag-style. The second one (for our second trip) was custom-made for the camera. That freed up the bag for storing valuables.

Several sites on the web have waterproof fanny packs. Just do a Google search and you'll find them. All are pretty reasonable.

old wife, are those bag-style ones any good? (at least to pack things in when we are snorkeling)? they seem to cost a little less but was wondering about quality.

The bag I had was made for cameras (I bought it from Henrys.com, a camera store). It works perfectly for putting anything in (I tested it first with Kleenexes in it and it didn't leak). It wasn't great for using a camera, though, because it was hard to 'find' the buttons when you were snorkelling (whereas the one made for my camera had the buttons on the outside, too, so it was easy to see what you were doing). The bag floats, though, which is handy if you let go.

Credit cards and coins dont mind getting wet. Don't take your good camera on bike outings, just an underwater disposable. Ziplock bag and an old fanny pack - or pocket on your trunks - works fine
