Well, we are only going to be staying there for one night after arriving in Papeete but I am worried that this hotel is a bigger "dump" than I expected from what I have read in reviews. I like the location but for $160 dollars I probably could have done a little better if I had "researched". It's too late to change arrangements now :( Any knowledge of this hotel? Will it be o.k. for one night?

It's Ok for 1 night, but make sure you get a room in the back. The rooms in the front of the hotel are very noisy due to the close proximity of the street and traffic. Right on the main Blvd. by the waterfront. Very basic, no frills room. Any more than 1 night and I'd go elsewhere.

Thanks DenverJoe! At least we will be close to the roulettes and market and ferry (which we are taking to Moorea the next morning). Maybe I can ask for extra pillows to increase the comfort factor!

How about the Tahiti Nui on Avenue Prince Hinoi, brand new "downtown" hotel

shelbydc, that's why we stayed there, close to the roulettes and ferry dock. There are a couple of bars to the right as you exit the hotel. Good for wasting time.

You might also consider Fare Suisse. It's a GREAT place to stay for an overnight at a VERY reasonable cost. It's in a residential area of Papeete. Probably about a 10-15 minute walk to the waterfront and roulottes. The price runs around 85-95 euros and includes free transportation to and from the airport and ferry docks. It is very nice, very clean, very comfortable, and very quite. Classified as a guest house. Beni (the Swiss owner) is nice. Very friendly. Speaks great English. He also serves a continental breakfast for 1000cfp.

We stayed at the Tiare last trip (after Pearl Tikehau, Manihi and Le Taha'a) and loved it. Great location for shopping and checking out Papeete, nice view of the harbour and boardwalk area. We'd stay there again in a heartbeat! We had the Panoramic Suite (as suggested by Jan in her book) and loved it. Room was big, great views of the city, close to everything and a quick stroll to the harbour for the food markets for dinner. We would highly recommend it. Thanks for the picture "reassurance" Gary/Cath! I think we'll be able to handle a nite there! I like more pillows than the pictures show so I may need to ask for a couple more :)

Poehere, I do like the accommodations at the Nui but (sigh) we are already booked and it would be costly to change- maybe next time :)

Shelby. There are plenty of pillows! We only use one each, but there are the other two on the other bed, plus two more in the linen closet. Go to town in pillow heaven. Just a tip - the A/C is freezing and it requires a card to keep it going (we used an old expired bank card trimmed slightly on the long side to keep the A/C going when were were out of the room shopping. You can trim down a plastic card to the same size as the room key, so just remember that 23 degrees C is room temperature. Any colder and you'll catch a cold. Tiled floor - not wood. Makes a MASSIVE difference. Oh, and ask for the Pnaoramic room on the top floor - negligable traffic noise.
