Yep per month. Our electricity bill is around 500 € /month but that includes pool, wages are per month... executives / government staff gain between appr. 4000 and 12000 € (no income tax... :))))

@YosemiteGirl2: Thanks =] Zurich is indeed a neat little city, I like it very much here. Did you have the pleasure to travel around, to Lausanne maybe? It's worth a trip.
@All: Thanks for the clarifications on the wages and prices. I'm realizing that if it wasn't for the electricity and internet costs, I'm pretty used to such prices. Thou I'm aware that they are very high for international standards.

I'd be perfectly happy in something rather spartan like the CBH bungalows.

Sub,
So which island are you looking at? Some of those listings are on Tahiti and some even on Tahiti-Iti. I think location would be VERY important, and there are areas even on Moorea where I wouldn't want to live.
Being an American, you can't purchase a house and land (without extreme red tape and LOTS of money)and so would have to rent. Unlike in the USA, the tenant is responsible for everything that goes wrong -- roof leaks, bad plumbing, yard maintenance -- and so maintenance becomes an important factor. Add to those rents the awful cost of electricity, and it becomes quite expensive, even for a small spartan shack on the mountainside in a remote location (and then you will have the cost of a car to get around).
Ah, we all have the dream, but it is more difficult than you can imagine. A good first step is to get a proper visa and stay for several months at a time first, to experience just how different "living" there is from "visiting" there.

Either one would work for me, and I have at least 10+ years to do anything. (probably more than that but I can retire from my current job in 2020). Just my pension alone should be at least $7k a month, more if I work longer, and contributions increase every contract year. Only thing I'm really wondering about is healthcare as I get the same plan I'm on now (Aetna PPO) for $50/mo but I'm not sure how coverage would work abroad. It seems to me that it would be smarter to just commit to living in Tahiti if thats what the dream is than going back and forth. All the negatives you wrote didn't deter me at all: maintenance? Great! I'd be retired so something to do. Rent? That was the idea anyway. Expensive electricity? I'll just do with less. No car? I started out on a bicycle so I can do that, or scooters work for me too! One of these years I will do a full month to get an even better taste of it, maybe as long as 8 weeks.
You've got to realize that when I read "Sex Lives of Canibals" I was ready to jump on a plane to Tarawa.
But if not Tahiti, maybe American Samoa,Guam, or even Hawaii; but definitely somewhere in the South Pacific.
Anyone ever tried getting French citizenship first?
I think a lot of these obstacles might be easier to breach when you're retired and not going to be taking anyones job.

I'm reading Surviving Paradise about a 21-yr-old American guy who went to an out-island in the Marshall Islands to be a volunteer teacher. I'm only 2/3 of the way through, but it's a really interesting read, too.

I have both other books by the same author Patti but haven't read them yet. I'm saving them for a vacation! I have alot of the same mindset and sense of the absurd as the author.
