OMFG that made me laugh LOL and needs an anecdote...
Recently had a (fixed) phone line installed and there is of course only 1 company here, costs a bundle and takes forever.... So after many weeks of waiting I called to inquire when they were actually thinking of doing so and after them complaining everyone was sick etc they agreed to set up an appointment for the week after and told me to stay home for the technicien to come by.
Ok done, stayed home and waited, then the cell phone rang and the technician is on the line and says: "you have an electronic gate, how do I get in?" So I tell him: "call me back when you're there and I'll open up for you". Ok, we hang up and I waited some more and he calls me back and says: "You know we don't really feel like coming all the way up to your house, why don't you take the (fixed) phone off the hook and put your radio on real loud..."! OMG so I am thinking this guy is taking me for a ride and tell him: "hey, when you get up to the gate, get out of your car and do a dance, if it is a nice dance, the gate will open up automatically..." But in fact he wasn't kidding at all and so after the many weeks of patience the phone got hooked up simply from a distance while I am sitting at home waiting like a dummy with the radio blaring loudly all around LOL

Nice post, Barbi. I'm surprised they don't need a DNA sample, provide a blood sample, urine sample, what is your implanted micro-chip ID, how much money do you have to spend, who is your favourite FP politician (so he/she can provide their direct deposit account details) and one your children! Surely then you could buy a shanti and live somewhere in the bush with a 5 mile walk to a public beach. After this, I wouldn't have the balls to ask for a fixed phone line!

That is the funniest TRUE story I've heard in a long time, Poehere!
Sub, if you have no police record, they want a letter (signed, notarized, with a big embossed stamp, if possible) from your police department saying you have no criminal record. AND it must be professional translated into French!
G&C, We are always expecting them to ask for our first-born child! Seriously, the new requirement of "repatriation insurance" even for a 3-month visa, is very expensive; we spent about $600 apiece for it last year. It pays to ship your dead body home if you die in FP!

They'll make you sing the national anthem "La Marseillaise" so best start practicing....

Aux armes, citoyens ! Formez vos bataillons ! Marchons, marchons ! Qu'un sang impur... Abreuve nos sillons !

I thought the National Anthem was "I Surrender" by Celine Dion? (too bad it's not Laura Pausini)

Good one, Sub. Being in the South Pacific, I Surrender is probably more appropriate than the Titanic theme.

As a US citizen living in FP for over 6 years now with a resident visa I can tell you that I have never been asked to renounce my US citizenship. According to the US Consular agent here that is urban legend and is unconstitutional. The US is not allowed to ask this of its citizens. Hope you find this useful info
