The White Sands Beach Resort (previously the Maitai Dream) is very nice compared to most of the more pension-like properties. We rode bikes there from Pension Havaiki when we were there in 2005 when Maitai was brand new. We asked to look at one of the bungalows - they were very luxurious compared to where we were staying - lots of dark woods and lots of room - beautiful bathrooms.
The grounds unfortunately looked like they'd been scraped of all vegetation during construction, but after 5 years it has probably recovered somewhat. The restaurant was very nice too with tables inside and outside on a deck overlooking the lagoon. So I'd say it was more than a few steps up from any other place on Fakarava.
We like Pension Havaiki very much, but the bungalow was fairly small and very basic with windows that are propped up with sticks and the breeze always blowing through. Only cold water at that time, but it was warm in the afternoons and evenings from the sun warming the water in the pipes. The bungalows sit right on the beach just steps away from the lagoon. Have heard they added more units, but haven't been able to see where or what they are like.
On Rangi Kia Ora Village is the upscale place to stay - can't believe they are remodeling again. We've been there twice. In 1999 they were doing a huge remodel, so I guess they thought it was time for another one..time flies even when you're not in FP.
Happy honeymooning and wish we were there.
