Hi, all.
We're going to be in Papeete on one Sunday and on Moorea the following Sunday (both in May). We'd like to go to church - not particular about Catholic versus Protestant. Can someone tell us how we should dress to be respectful? We're packing very light otherwise, so I'm thinking we'll have space for whatever clothes are best. Please feel free to go into ridiculous detail, I'm sure it will be helpful. And, we've got 1 man and 2 women in the group, so we'd like to know the "deal" for both.
And last, if you have recommendations about which churches to go to, I'd love to hear that too. We've heard the music/singing is wonderful so we'd like to hear that.
Thanks! Teddy

Most Tahitians dress casually but respectfully for church. It is traditional, but not mandatory, to wear white, if you can.
For women, a lightweight skirt and blouse, or a sundress that is not too revealing. For men, a collared cotton shirt and cotton pants (not jeans) or nice (longer)shorts. Sandals are okay. Hats are not required. You will see some locals (mostly kids and teens) dressed in shorts and tanks, but it's not acceptable for tourists -- too disrespecful.
Here are the Sunday service/mass times from the Moorea Guide:
Moorea PROTESTANT: in Maharepa, Teavaro, Afareaito, Haapiti, and Papetoai, Sundays at 10 a.m.
Moorea CATHOLIC: At Pao Pao, Sundays at 10 a.m.; at Papetoai, Sundays at 8 a.m.; At Haapiti, Sundays at 7:30 a.m.;at Afareaitu, Saturdays at 6 p.m.
Sorry, I don't have the Tahiti church times.

And plese DO go. The singing alone is worth the experience. Then there is the dress of the people, the way the kids are managed, and on and on. It will be a highlight of your visit. (Bring a small something to fan yourself with - it can get stifling)
