5th Taputapuatea Festival
June 30 - July 3, 2010
This event, to be held in Raiatea, is named "Te Ana Pu Iva Fe'e Maohi Tere Moana", which means "the octopus' eight tentacles that glide in the ocean". It traces the history of Polynesian migrations and the uniting of South Pacific islands to Raiatea, the sacred island. Various ceremonies and ancestral customs (dancing, singing, cooking, etc...) will be presented.

Great outrigger canoe racing in Papeete Harbor and its channel between Tahiti and Moorea, featuring nearly 1,500 men and women paddlers, all dressed in traditional pareus and flower head crowns. These top athletes will compete in the junior, senior and veteran categories in 1-paddler, 3-paddler, 6-paddler and 16-paddler canoes.

Total Solar Eclipse in the Tuamotu Atolls

The Total Solar Eclipse in the remote Southern Pacific Ocean of the Tuamotu atolls will be experienced for approximately 4mn. This exceptional and rare phenomenon will be seen from many islands in Polynesia including Tahiti (more than 98% of totality), but the 100% total eclipse, will be seen in the atolls of Tatakoto, Hikueru, Anaa and Hao.

128th Heiva Festival starts in Tahiti

A special ceremony was held over the weekend close to the To'ata place and in the Paofai Gardens in Papeete to launch the 128th Heiva I Tahiti or Tahiti Festival.
It was the first time ever that such a ceremony was held in the Paofai Gardens.
The Heiva Nui committee in charge of the Tahiti Festival wanted to make something different for this year.
No less than 300 dancers took part in this formal Heiva I Tahiti opening.
Furthermore, they were asked to show Tahitian dances from the 1960's and from famous choreographer Madeleine Moua.
This year's theme for the Heiva I Tahiti will be the rainbow, the colors being symbols of celebration and links between the different Polynesian islands.
Dance schools will first perform at the To'ata place from June 8 to June 12.
Then the contest will really start for major groups, still at the To'ata place. But, this year, only one professional dance group will take part in the event.
The official singing and dances' contest will be held from July 9 to July 23 at the To'ata place.
The Heiva Festival also includes stone lifting competitions, javelin throwing, and banana bearer races.
There will also be outrigger canoe races from July 2 to July 14 in the Papeete harbor.
