Great forum. I need some direction! Our family of 5 is going to FP and we have narrowed down our selection to the Tuamotus. Our main interest is "off the owb snorkeling" and doing a drift dive or two. Which place would you choose, and is wind really more of a factor in one place over the other? We're traveling in December.
Thanks!

I've never been to Tikehua, but the snorkeling from the OWB and the pass is really good on Manihi. Plus the Pearl is a nice resort. People are great and the accoms are also. Celine, the bartender is a hoot. I'm sure people that have been to Tikehau will chime in soon. I don't think you could go wrong with either place. Especially since the resorts are both Pearl's.

We've been to both and enjoyed both very much. Both are quite windy so that shouldn't affect your decision unless you are thinking of the overwater suites at Tikehau. The wind where they are located can be fierce and for that reason IMHO you would do better with their regular OWBs. We thought the snorkeling off the OWBs at Manihi was better, more coral formations and therefore more fish. Food is good at both but we would give Manihi the edge on that as well. If we could return to only one, we would chose Manihi.

Thanks, Manihi it is. Is 6 nights with 3 kids too much time? My only concern would be if the weather is bad we'd be stir crazy with nothing to do. We live in Kauai, where the rainy season is often 2 inches/day - does the weather get so bad that it'd keep you indoors?

Hi QT314, we stayed at Tikehau Pearl and Manihi Pearl last Nov/Dec and there was only a pleasant, cooling breeze during our stay. The rooms at Tikehau (O/W Suite) are far superior to the Manihi OWB's (but the regular OWB's at Tikehau have better snorkelling off the rooms). We stayed in POWB #31 at Manihi and it had tons of coral and fish swimming around and underneath the room.
The staff were very friendly and helpful at both resorts and agree with Jake re the food. The diving was a lot better at Tikehau so for Gary we would probably return to Tikehau before Manihi (but we had a great time at both resorts!!)

Thanks Gary and Cath, I did read your trip review and found it very helpful, and loved the photos also. Your review was well written and informative.
How did you get from Tikehau to Manihi? Maybe we'll split our week, but didn't know if we had to travel between islands via PPT which would be a waste of time. Is there an island hopper between the two atolls?

Yes, QT314, you fly from Tikehau via Rangiroa to Manihi (I think our stopover in Rangi was approx 50 mins). I personally would not stay any less than 4 nights at each resort because you lose so much time transitting and travelling to each resort (and you have to be at the local airports one hour before departure).

Pearl resorts is doing their stay 3 pay 2 (or stay 6 pay 4) so our choice is either split it up or stay all 6 days..... torn, don't want to lose a day transferring....leaning towards roughing it at Manihi

Have you checked out this deal on SPM (Pearl) website re the family specials:
http://www.bora-bora-resort.org/article/special-offers/special-offers/family-special-offers
Also, the inter-island flights between Manihi and Tikehau only fly a couple of days a week, eg for Nov/Dec last year when we travelled the flights were:
Manihi to Tikehau = Monday only
Tikehau to Manihi = Mon, Wed and Sat only
and one flight every day from the atolls back to Papeete.

Gary and Cath,
Yes, our TA did include the family special, unfortunately only one of the 3 kids is under 14. We are also staying over New Year's Eve, which requires us to pay the $290 pp surcharge for a "special dinner" - ouch. The kids eat a lot, but not that much!
