We've been discussing this in the "Need Help, Barbi" topic, but I've decided to start a new thread with "visa" in the title for search purposes. I received this email today from the French Consulate in LA:
"Bonjour, I confirm that a US citizen staying in Tahiti for tourism for less than 90 days no longer needs a visa. However, if you are doing research, for instance, or if you are going to work there, you still need a visa. Our website is now up to date and the information you will find is correct. Regards, EM."
The website for the French Consulate in Los Angeles now states:
"if you are a U.S citizen or hold a passport issued by a country NOT listed above, you do not need any visa to enter a French Overseas Territories as a tourist for a short stay less than 90 days.
However, if the purpose of your trip is NOT tourism, then you may still be required to get a visa before your departure (work, scientific research, etc.). "
So if you are contemplating a trip to FP for more than 30 days, you no longer need to go through the short-stay visa process.

I hope the other French consular offices in the USA will be updating their webpages too. This is a welcome change, but it was like pulling teeth to find out about and confirm it!

Any idea if that applies to Canadians, too? Not that we can afford to stay more than 30 days (or hubby get the time off work that long, but I'm thinking in the future).

Old Wife, you'd need to check with your closest French Consulate. Good luck trying to get this information!

Canada was one of the countries "NOT listed above" in the link that Barbi provided so it should apply to Canadians. ("or hold a passport issued by a country NOT listed above, you do not need any visa to enter a French Overseas Territories as a tourist for a short stay less than 90 days.")
I'm wondering if they indeed now stamp your passport with a valid for entry date 90 days later. Has anyone been to FP recently and noticed that?

Silvanocat, I don't think it can work like that. The ninety days doesn't need to be all at once; a person can come for one month on one trip and for two months a few months later, all within a six months period.
I'm trying to figure this out too, and can only imagine that they look at your entry-exit dates within the last six months. Although that could be very burdensome to do with an actual passport (because those dang stamps are all over the place), they've got all that info on their computer screen at immigration as soon as they enter your passport info.
We were there in March (the new law took effect in January), and they didn't do anything different with the passport stamps. Our July trip will use up the 90 day total (from March 1 to September 1 as a six-month period), so it will be interesting to see what they do on our passports.
