According to Tahiti Tourisme, a resident of the U.K. can stay up to 90 days without a visa. To be absolutely sure this is the current law, check with the French Consulate in London: http://www.ambafrance-uk.org
Welcome to the forum, Joleen!

Joleen,
American dollars are not widely accepted, and where they are, they bring a poor exchange rate. Your best bet is to exchange your local money (British pounds, Euros) on arrival at the Papeete airport bank, which is open for all incoming flights even in the middle of the night. You will get the best exchange rate in Tahiti.

Thank you very much Barbie. I just wrote to the French Consulate in Washington DC since they have differente information. They stated intheir WEB page that an american citizen does not need visa if traveling less than 30 days. Go figure!! The information you provided is very important!!!

I have been calling the Consulate in Chicago about the long stay visa.
The rules seem to be different than LA. Lots more relaxed, but then again, we haven't done it yet.
There is paperwork needed from insurance, banks, pay stubs and they said that those do not have to be translated into French. I was wondering how that could be done.
The Chicago one said that an FBI report is not required, although it still says it on the LA one. It says "local police" report, but that means the FBI.
The long stay visa documents are the same as the ones for France.
I hope it all goes OK. If not, I will let you know the goof ups we made. I haven't made the appointment yet.

Holte, If you are getting different information on the phone than what is on the Chicago consulate's website, I would be VERY careful that you have all your ducks in a row before you go for your appointment! Here's what the website says you need for your hubby's long-stay (5 months) visa (you don't need one for two months in a six-month period):
6. Requirements You must provide a French translation of every document and are required to please enclose the originals plus 1 photocopy of each document submitted with the application (including the translations). You are also required to provide the documents in the order listed below and as such: original + 1 copy, translation + 1 copy, original + 1 copy, and so on.
One application form filled out completely and signed by the applicant (please read carefully the explanation or click here for the English version).
One ID pictureglued/stapled onto the application form
Questionnaire duly filled out in French
Original passport or travel document (+ ONE COPY of the identity pages). Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years ago, be valid for at least three months after your return to the US and have at least 2 blank visas pages left.
Status in the US - If you are not a US citizen, copy of your green card or visa.
Letter promising not to engage in any employment in France (signature certified by a notary public)
Letter of employment in the US stating occupation and earnings
Proof of means of income - letter from the bank, investment certificates, pension slips, …
Proof of medical insurance
Marriage certificate or family book + Birth certificates for children
Proof of accommodation in France (title deeds, lease or rental agreement)
Processing fee
One residence form duly filled out (upper part only)
A self-addressed prepaid EXPRESS MAIL envelope from the US POST OFFICE ONLY - NO FEDEX / UPS / AIRBORNE EXPRESS accepted. You may use one envelope per family if you buy `flat rate`
Please do NOT stick the mailing label on the envelope and fill out as follows :
FROM: CONSULATE GENERAL OF FRANCE 205N. Michigan Ave, Suite 3760 CHICAGO, IL 60601 TO: Your full name Your address

Holte,
If your hubby DOES wind up needing a translator, both Hamara and I know a reliable one on Moorea we can refer you to, who can do it by email, and you can pay for his services either through his American Paypal account or through me or Bob.

Thanks Barbi. I am waiting to find out if there is a French teacher here that can do it. They seem to have eliminated studying French here, as far as I can tell.
I am a wreck as I have hubby signed up to fly to Chicago for the day in a little over a week. My health insurance company better come through with their letter soon enough,
I have to work o n this stuff tomorrow, so if I have questions, I will be calling on you.
So a big thank you.

And if you need anything this end Holte do not hesitate...
Jeeeez one would think in view of the present visitor's statistics they would be inclined to relax the rules a little huh.... thought they had promised to simply procedures too ??!!
Just to make you feel better, from our end, if we do not have the Esta approval -even for people transiting USA- no check in at the airport in Tahiti or wherever possible aie aie aie, maybe you as a Canadian want to look into that too for the return flight...)
